Ronald Lamont “Winky” Wright was born on the 26th November 1971, in Washington DC, USA, and is a retired professional boxer. According to the professional boxing record, he had 58 fights overall, for 51 wins, six losses and a draw. Wright was active in the professional sport from 1990 to 2012.

To begin with, Wright began boxing in 1987. During his amateur career in the welterweight division, he had a record of 52 wins with only four defeats. In 1989, he won the Championship of Florida, the Florida Golden Gloves, the Southeastern Golden Gloves and the Sunshine State Games. At the National Golden Gloves, the most prestigious amateur boxing tournament in the USA, he only lost in the semi-finals and thus won the bronze medal. In 1990, he won among others the USA Olympic Festival in Minneapolis, and the bronze medal at the USA Championships.

He began his professional career in the autumn of 1990, and won 25 consecutive fights, including 18 by knockout. He was quickly recognized by journalists as talented, and was characterized as having good boxing technique. In 1994, he was in Saint-Jean-de-Luz fighting for the world title of the WBA in the light middleweight against the reigning world champion, Julio César Vásquez (50-1), he clearly lost on points after 12 rounds. Then, he won nine more fights consecutively, including against Larry Lacoursière (19-3) and Andrew Council (25-3). In 1996, he won the NABF and then WBO world titles at light middleweight, but lost the WBO belt to Harry Simon (16-0). After a following win over Bronco McKart (42-2) and another win against Keith Mullings, he fought for the IBF title, defeating Robert Frazier (23-4) by unanimous decision, reaching the peak of his career.

In 2004, Wright fought the champion of the WBA and WBC, Shane Mosley (39-2), Wright winning the fight by unanimous decision, and was recognized as #1 in the light-middleweight division by Ring Magazine. During the rematch Wright again won on points, then after this fight, he rose to the middleweight division. In 2005, he defeated Félix Trinidad (42-1) by unanimous decision, whereupon he announced his retirement from boxing, however, he actually continued his career and fought against WBO / WBC champion Jermain Taylor (25-0) for the world title, with the fight being a draw but Taylor retained his title. At the end of 2006, he managed to achieve a last significant victory, defeating Ike Quartey (37-3) by unanimous decision.

In the summer of 2007, he suffered defeat against Bernard Hopkins (47-4) after which he was out of the ring for over one and a half years. In the spring of 2009, he lost against Paul Williams (36-1), and for a last fight, he returned on the 2nd June, 2012, but lost against undefeated Peter Quillin (26-0) on points.

Afterwards, the boxer announced his retirement from the professional sport.
