Ronald L. Kuby Wiki Biography
Ronald L. Kuby was born on 31 July 1956, in Cleveland, Ohio USA, and is a criminal defense and civil rights lawyer, radio talk show host and television commentator, one of the best known figures in the fields of criminal defense and civil rights.
A noted lawyer, how rich is Ron Kuby? Sources state that Kuby has established a wealth of over $5 million, as of mid-2017, the main source being his career in law, but also his involvement in radio and television industry.
Kuby grew up in Cleveland; when he was five, his parents divorced, and he lived with his mother. He attended Cleveland State University for one year, and then enrolled at the University of Kansas, obtaining degrees in cultural anthropology and history. He later received his Juris Doctor from New York’s Cornell University Law School.
Kuby’s foray into political activism started at an early age. When he was 13, he joined the Jewish Defense League (JDL), a pro-Israel, pro-Zionist organization, and around this time dropped out of school and moved to Israel, but returned home shortly after, being repulsed by what he perceived as the ‘anti-Arab racism’ in Israel. Dropping out of Cleveland State, he moved to St. Croix in the United States Virgin Islands, and then to Kansas, where he completed his education in the late ’70s.
In 1982 Kuby became an intern with William Kunstler, a lawyer famous for his controversial clients and cases. The two built a strong partnership, collaborating on many notorious criminal cases together, including Yu Kikumura, a Japanese Red Army terrorist arrested for carrying a bomb in his luggage in 1986; El Sayyid Nosair, convicted for murdering JDL founder Rabbi Meir Kahane in 1990; Colin Ferguson, an African American responsible for the Long Island Rail Road shooting in 1993; Sheikh Omar Abdel-Rahman, who led the Al-Gama’a al-Islamiyya militant group accused of planning terrorist attacks in the USA in 1993; as well as Qubilah Shabazz, the daughter of Malcolm X, accused of planning to kill Louis Farrakhan in 1995. Being involved in such major cases with Kunstler brought Kuby wide publicity, and enabled him to earn a considerable net worth.
When Kunstler died in 1995, Kuby continued to be involved with such controversial cases. One of those included that of black teenager Darrell Cabey, for whom Kuby won a $43 million civil lawsuit against Bernhard Goetz, a white man who had shot and paralyzed Cabey in the 1984 New York City Subway shooting. Another case involved members of the Hells Angels motorcycle club wrongfully arrested by the New York City Police Department, for whom Kuby won almost $1 million. Kuby also defended convicted child abuser Jesse Friedman, the All-Mighty Latin King and Queen Nation street gang, the con artist/robber David Hampton, and several defendants with alleged organized-crime connections, such as the Gambino crime family. These cases enabled him to achieve a great level of fame, and to amass a significant fortune.
Kuby continues to head the Law Office of Ronald L. Kuby in New York City, which has served as the primary source of his net worth.
Aside from his career as a lawyer, he has been involved in radio and television too, serving as a co-host of the popular daily radio show called “Curtis and Kuby in the Morning” on the New York City station WABC-AM 770 from 1999 to 2007, along with Curtis Sliwa. The duo later hosted a short-lived television program on MSNBC. In 2008 Kuby became a broadcaster on Air America Radio, hosting the show “Doing Time with Ron Kuby” until 2009. He returned to WABC with Sliwa in 2014, working on the station until 2017. His radio and television work has additionally increased Kuby’s net worth.
When it comes to his personal life, Kuby has been married to Marilyn Vasta since 2006. The couple has one child together, and the family resides in New York City.
