After 68 amateur fights with 64 victories,Mayweather turned professional, and won his debut fight against Andrew Ruiz in mid-1981 in Las Vegas. Until his first world title chance, he defeated 13 other opponents, the 13th being against Ruben Muñoz in October 1982 for the USA lightweight championship. At the beginning of 1983, he defeated Samuel Serrano (47-4) for the WBA super featherweight championship by TKO in the eighth round. He subsequently defended the title twice against previously undefeated Jorge Alvarado, and Benedicto Villablanca, however, at the beginning of 1984, he lost his world title by knock-out to Rocky Lockridge. Regardless, his net worth was rising.
Four subsequent victories brought Roger to Las Vegas in 1985 and a new world title chance at super-featherweight, defeating the previously undefeated WBC title-holder Julio Chávez in the second round. Against the IBO title-holder and four times world title challenger Mario Martínez (38-2) he won by points, however, in the fight with the later IBF champion Freddie Pendleton he lost surprisingly by knockout in the sixth round. His net worth was still improving.
By early victories against Oscar Bejines (31-3), Sergio Zambrano (34-1) and the later WBO champion Sammy Fuentes, Mayweather could keep his ranking, but lost on points against Pernell Whitaker in March 1987, but then defeating René Arredondo (40-3) by TKO in the sixth round and thus becoming champion in the WBC light-welterweight division. In 1988, he successfully defended his title four times, but then in mid-1989 he again lost to Julio Chávez.
Still, victories against Jose Rivera and Terrence Alli earned Roger an IBF world title chance at light welterweight against Rafael Pineda, but the Colombian defeated him by knockout in the ninth round. Until the end of 1993, Mayweather fought eight more times, of which he won five, and again getting a chance during his next seven fights to win world titles of the IBO in light-welter and welterweight. In mid-1995, he fought again for the IBF world light-welterweight title, but lost to the holder, Australian Kostya Tszyu on points.
In May 1999 Roger Mayweather fought his last boxing match, winning on points against Javier Francisco Mendez, after wich he announced his retirement. During his entire career he had 72 fights, 59 of them won (35 won by KO), and 13 lost. Subsequently, Roger has been mostly involved in training his nephew and undefeated world champion Floyd Mayweather, Jr.– no doubt some of Floyd’s enormous prize money has found it’s way to Roger.
Finally, the personal life of the boxer, he is single. His brothers Floyd Mayweather, Sr. (1952) and Jeff Mayweather (1964) are also former professional boxers, as is another nephew, Justin Jones (1987) . Roger’s health is now said to be deteriorating, apparently from damage suffered during his ring career.
