Robert is the son of a Methodist priest, and he grew up in Brookhaven. When he turned 15 years old, Robert started working as a radio announcer, but only to collect enough money to buy himself flying lessons. However, he soon discovered his desire for work on the radio, and as a result, he worked for several radio stations in Pittsburgh, Chicago, and then eventually landed a job at the New York NBC flagship station, WNBC-AM, when he was 23 years old. Little by little he moved on to television, and was one of the hosts of the music video and news show that aired on O&O Television station. As his experience grew, Robert wanted to start on his own, and teaming up with several other entrepreneurs, he created MTV’s original format, and then served as CEO and President of the network. Soon MTV began growing and expanding, which increased his net worth to a large degree.

After his stint at MTV was finished, Robert started Quantum Media with MCA. His next move was buying MCA, and selling it to Warner Communications to become senior advisor to the company’s CEO Steve Ross. At the same time, Warner was in the process of merging with Time Inc. to form Time Warner. Then he became President and CEO of Time Warner Enterprises, while the following year he was appointed as Chairman and CEO of Six Flags Theme Parks. His job was to revitalize the Six Flags brand, which he successfully accomplished by using a “classic second-place strategy” with their “Bigger than Disneyland, closer to home” positioning of the brand. This resulted in an increase in attendance from 17 million to 25 million. However, Time Warner sold Six Flags to Boston Ventures in 1995, and Robert immediately left the firm.

Robert wasn’t long without a job, as he joined Century 21 Real Estate as its CEO, which also improved his wealth, and where he became acquainted with Steve Case, and was appointed to the board of directors of America Online, Inc. In 1996 he was already president of AOL Networks, and then its President and COO of America Online Inc. He made the company profitable and from six million members he took the service to 30 million. In 2001, AOL was acquired by Time Warner, and Robert was named the Co-COO, then sole COO of both companies but decided to leave the firm just a year later.

His next business venture was the Pilot Group LLC, which he co-founded with several other investors, and through the firm, he owned Thrillist, Tasting Table, Daily Candy, and also owned a stake in Facebook, and Huffington Post.

In 2010 he became Chairman of Media and Entertainment Platforms for Clear Channel and also invested in the company. Four years later he rebranded it to iHeartMedia, Inc, and since then has led the company to national success, which has added a significant amount to his wealth.

Regarding his personal life, Robert has been married to Veronique Choa since 1997; the couple has two children together. Previously, he was married Sandy Hill from 1979 until 1997, with whom he has a son.
