Robert Evander McNair Wiki Biography

Robert Evander McNair was born on the 14th December 1923, in Cades, Williamsburg County, South Carolina USA, and was a politician. McNair is known to have served as the Governor of the State of South Carolina from 1965 to 1971. He passed away in 2007.

How much was the net worth of Robert McNair? It has been estimated by authoritative sources that the overall size of his wealth was as much as $2.4 billion, converted to the present day, accumulated from his law practice and political appointments.

To begin with, Robert was raised in Cades, and served as a member of the US Navy in the Pacific Rim during World War II. Then he studied at the University of South Carolina, in 1948 passing his legal examination, whereupon he opened a law firm in Moncks Corner.

Concerning his professional career, McNair served as a deputy in the House of Representatives of South Carolina from 1951 to 1962, when he was elected vice governor of his state. When the acting Governor, Donald Stuart Russell, resigned from office on the 22nd April 1965 McNair became his successor. On the 8th November 1966, he was confirmed in office with 58.2% of the votes cast against Joseph Rogers for four full years. His entire term of office was overshadowed by unrest related to racial discrimination, as tt was the time of the growing civil rights movement. On the 8th February 1968, the so-called Orangeburg massacre occurred when during a demonstration the police shot into the crowd of students, and during this incident three black students were killed and 27 injured – the Governor blamed the activists of the so-called black power movement. Nevertheless, he was struggling to reduce tensions between races. There followed the desegregation of the schools and a reform of the school system in South Carolina; 1970 was the first integrated school year in South Carolina, the first year after the end of segregation in schools. From this point on, there were at least officially no separate schools in South Carolina. As early as 1965, the first black student had been admitted to Furman University, which had previously been reserved for white-skinned students only. In the same year, a federal law for the black population was passed. Until then, this officially existing right was unlawfully tied to conditions that excluded most blacks from the elections.

In November of 1970, the first black deputies were elected in the 20th century. After the end of his term in the office on the 19th January 1971, he became a member of a large law firm. He was also the director of a life insurance company, Southern Railway Systems and various other companies.

Overall, all the above mentioned engagements added sums to the total size of Robert McNair’s net worth.

Finally, in the personal life of Robert McNair, he was married to Josephine Robinson, with whom he had four children. He died on the 17th November 2007 in Charleston, South Carolina, USA.
