He is best known to the world as ta politician, in particular earning his fame and part of his net worth as the longest serving Governor of Texas, from 2000 to 2015. His career as a politician has been active since 1984.

In 1990, he embarked on a campaign to become the Commissioner of Agriculture for Texas; eventually emerging victorious in the runoff against Richard McIver. He served as a commissioner until 1998, when he chose not to stand again, but instead devoted himself to becoming the Lieutenant Governor of Texas. He gained the governorship on the 21^st December 2000, succeeding George W. Bush who became the President of the USA.

Over the following years, Perry dominated the elections for the Texas Governor, winning mandates on three different occasions, in 2002, 2006, and 2010. This made him the longest serving Governor of Texas and it has increased his overall net worth. During his tenure, he had also run for president as a Republican candidate in 2012, however, his results were inferior to the other Republican candidates, Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich.

In 2013 he announced that he would leave the position of Governor when his 2010 mandate ends, and in 2015, he was succeeded by Dan Patrick. His latest venture in his career as a politician includes candidacy for the presidential election of the 2016.
