Randall Charles Bachman Wiki Biography
Randolph Charles Bachman was born on the 27th September 1943, in Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada, and is a musician, singer and guitarist best known to the world as guitarist of the rock band The Guess Who, while he also launched the band Bachman-Turner Overdrive. His career started in 1960.
Have you ever wondered how rich Randy Bachman is, as of early 2017? According to authoritative sources it has been estimated that Bachman’s net worth is as high as $15 million, earned through his successful career as a musician. Apart from his band career, Randy has also released 15 solo albums, including “Axe” (1970), “Survivor” (1978), “Every Song Tells A Story” (2001), and “Heavy Blues” (2015), which is a collaboration with other notable musicians such as Neil Young, Peter Frampton, Jeff Healey, and Joe Bonamassa.
Randy is the son of Karl Bachman and Anne Dobrinsky, and is of German and Ukrainian descent. At an early age he was introduced to music, and at the tender age of three he won a singing contest on CKY’s King of Saddle, and two years later began violin lessons which he continued for the next seven years before deciding to quit as he felt he had outgrown the lessons. Three years later he saw Elvis Presley perform on television, and fell in love with the guitar and its sound, and with the help of Lenny Breau he learned finger picking. Randy became intrigued with the guitar, and while visiting a Les Paul concert, the famous guitarist taught Randy a guitar lick and how to play the song “How High the Moon”.
When it comes to his education, Randy wasn’t quite a model student, as he was expelled from several schools, and didn’t graduate from college. Nevertheless, Randy found his calling in music, and with Chad Allan co-founded the band Al and the Silvertones in 1962. Soon they changed the name to Chad Allan and the Expressions, and then to The Guess Who. Randy stayed in the band until the early ‘70s, and oversaw the release of such albums as “Shakin’ All Over” (1965), “It’s Time” (1966), “Weatfielf Soul” (1969), and “American Woman” (1970) which reached No. 1 on the US charts, and marked the start of dominance of the band, however, Randy left due to differences with other band members – Randy is a Mormon, and was against drugs, alcohol and the rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle, which forced him to leave the band.
Randy then started a band called Brave Bet, which featured his brother Robbie Bachman and friend Chad Allan. Soon they were joined by Fred Turner, which resulted in a heavier sound. However, Allan left the group and Randy brought in his second brother, Tim as a vocalist, and changed the name to Bachman-Turner Overdrive, taking the name of Fred. Since the mid- ‘70s they have released nine studio albums, including “Four Wheel Drive” (1975), “Freeways” (1977), “Street Action” (1978), and “Bachman-Turner Overdrive” (1984), among others, which have sold nearly 30 million copies worldwide.
Regarding Randy’s personal life, he has been married twice, and has seven children from those marriages. His first wife was Lorayne Stevenson, with whom he was married from 1966 to 1977, and the couple has six children together. In 1982 he married Denise McCann, but they divorced in 2011; the couple has one child together.

Randall Charles Bachman Quotes
- [on himself and Burton Cummings in 1967] We went to England to be the new Beatles and we were the new flops.
- [on hiring Dale Anne Brendon and Anna Ruddick of ‘Ladies of the Canyon’] I told them: “Bonham, Moon and Baker did not play the drums. They attacked the drums. They hit the drums like they were hitting a guy in the face in a bar fight”. Dale Anne and Anna said, “You mean we’re allowed to do this?” I said, “Yes, you are”…We launch into a song and I look at Kevin [Shirley] and we’re going “Oh, wow! This is fucking amazing! These chicks are blowing the windows out of the room!”
- The power trios changed the world for me and for every other guitar player. You got an amp, you cranked it up, you learned one riff, you were Eric Clapton. You learned a couple of power chords, you were Pete Townshend and you started writing songs. It was amazing. And it still is!
- [As a teenager, hearing his own song on the radio for the first time] You actually sit and listen to it and you’re in awe and disbelief and you actually cry. We actually had tears. This is your Elvis moment, or your Beatles moment or your Madonna moment.
- [on his radio show ‘Vinyl Tap’] I kind of just go in and talk. So I’m not really dead-on correct when I mention the date when I met so-and-so – it might be June or it might be July – or January. I know it began with a J.
- When I pull into a city and I rent a car and it’s Nashville, or it’s London, or I’m driving in the taxi to the hotel, and on comes one of my songs, it’s like ‘Oh my God, they’re still playing these songs on the radio. And you still feel tearful and very grateful that somebody still likes these songs that you made up.
- My songs are like cheap Neil Young copies.
- I don’t think that bands that make it on their first album are as strong as bands that don’t: there is nowhere to go but down.
Randall Charles Bachman Important Facts
- His surname is pronounced “Back-man.” Since he knew radio DJs wouldn’t pronounce the name correctly, he has accepted that the name in his band Bachman-Turner Overdrive is pronounced “Bach-man”.
- Currently resides on Salt Spring Island, British Columbia, Canada. [2006]
- Father of musician Tal Bachman.
- Bachman-Turner Overdrive’s record “You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet” was a ‘novelty’ record in as much as they recorded it with a deliberate stammer as a joke. Turns out it was one of the best selling records of all time.
