Rahul Gandhi was raised with his younger sister in a famous family by his father, the late Rajiv Gandhi, who was the Prime Minister of India, and his mother Sonia Gandhi, who is the current President of Indian National Congress Party; his grandmother was Indira Gandhi, who was the Prime Minister, too. Rahul is also the great-grandson of Jawaharlal Nehru, known for being India’s first Prime Minister. He went to St. Columba’s School, Delhi, after which he attended The Doon School in Dehradun, Uttarakhand. Soon, the family was forced to give him home-school education following the assassination of his grandmother Indira Gandhi in 1984.However, he enrolled at St. Stephen’s College, Delhi in 1989, and later transferred to Harvard University. In 1991, his father was killed by the Tamil Tigers (LTTE), so he transferred again to Rollins College in Florida, USA, from which he graduated with a BA degree in 1994. While in college, his real name was known only by security agencies and the university officials. In the following year, he earned his M.Ph. degree from Trinity College, Cambridge, and right after graduation, he started to work at the Monitor Group, a management consulting company in London, and in 2002, he became one of the directors of Backops Services Private Ltd., based in Mumbai.
Rahul’s political career began in March of 2004, when he ran to compete in the May 2004 Lok Sabha elections, India’s lower house of Parliament, as a member of the Indian National Congress political party from the constituency of Amethi in Uttar Pradesh. During that time, the seat was held by his mother, until he moved to the neighboring seat of Rae Bareilly. Although the Congress had only 10 of the 80 Lok Sabha seats in the state, Rahul won the elections and became a Member of Parliament for Amethi, which marked the beginning of an increase of his net worth. Alongside his sister Priyanka Gandhi, he managed their mother’s campaign for re-election in 2006, and they won with over 400,000 votes, so the Congress won 22 seats.
In the following year, Rahul was named General Secretary of the All India Congress Committee, and he also became the Chairperson of the National Students Union of India and the Indian Youth Congress. He stayed in the position of General Secretary of the Indian National Congress until 2013, when he was selected for the position of the Vice-President of the party, which added a considerable amount to his net worth.
Most recently, Rahul appeared in the Indian general election in 2014 from the constituency of Amethi in Uttar Pradesh, but winning only 44 seats, so losing to Narendra Modi.
