Phil Dawson grew up in Texas where he went to the Lake Highlands High School in Dallas, and was a letterman in football as both kicker and offensive tackle before injuring his knee and deciding to stick with kicking. Dawson matriculated in 1993 and then enrolled at the University of Texas at Austin, where he tied the school record of 54 consecutive extra points made.

Phil was undrafted in the 1998 NFL Draft, after which the Oakland Raiders signed him, but he never played a single game for them. After being waived, the New England Patriots picked Dawson, but he failed to move any further than the practice squad. In March 1999, the Cleveland Browns signed Dawson, and he stayed there until 2012. Dawson set a Cleveland record for most consecutive field goals made (29) and most field goals in a game. In the 2007 season, he made it to the Second-team All-Pro. Although he was set to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2010 season, the Browns cut the franchise tag on him, and kept him until 2012. He was selected to his first ever Pro Bowl game that year, while he also made it to the Second-team All-Pro.

In March 2013, Dawson signed a contract with the San Francisco 49ers, and in his first season at the Bay, he made 32 out of 36 field goals, setting the franchise record of 27 consecutive field goals converted in the process. In the Wild Card playoff game against the Green Bay Packers, Dawson made the game-winning field goal for the 23-20 win, and in March 2014, he signed a two-year contract extension with the 49ers, further helping his rising net worth. In 2016, he extended his stay for one more year, while in November he recorded his 400th field goal in a game against the New England Patriots. After the 2016 season had ended, Phil Dawson signed a two-year deal with the Arizona Cardinals, which also boosted his net worth.
