Petro Poroshenko Wiki Biography
Born Petro Oleksiuovych Poroshenko on the 26th September 1965, in Bolhrad, (then) Ukrainian SSR, Soviet Union, he is a politician, best known to the world as the President of Ukraine, a position he has held since 2014. Aside from his political power, Petro has also had success as a businessman, becoming one of Ukraine’s oligarchs. His most famous company is the chocolate manufacturer Roshen.
Have you ever wondered how rich Petro Poroshenko is, as of mid- 2017? According to authoritative sources, it has been estimated that Poroshenko’s net worth is as high as $1.6 billion, earned through his successful careers which began in the late ‘80s.
He spent part of his childhood in Bendery, which is now a part of the sovereign country Moldova. During his upbringing, young Petro was trained in judo and sambo, but was left without gold medal at graduation due to his ill behavior during school – a C grade for his behavior. After high school, Petro he enlisted into the Soviet Army and after he was involved in a fight with several other cadets, was sent to army service in Kazakh SSR, in northern Central Asia.
He subsequently studied economics at Kiev State University from 1982 until 1989, and concurrently started a legal advisory firm, which focused on making settlements between two factions in foreign trade, and soon enough began investing his profits in supplying cocoa beans to the Soviet chocolate industry. Two years after his initial involvement in the chocolate industry, Petro started the UkrPromInvest Ukrainian Industry and Investment Company, which specialized in confectionery, and spent the next five years developing his business by acquiring several confectionery companies, finally combining into the Roshen Confectionery Corporation in 1996. Since then, his company has become one of the largest confectionery manufacturing groups, which has significantly increased his wealth.
He has since expanded his kingdom to media, as he owns TV channel 5 kanal, and he also owns a ship building and the armament company, Kuznya na Rybalskomu, further increasing his wealth.
When it comes to his political career, he first ventured into politics in 1998, by winning a spot in the Verkhovna Rada, the Ukrainian Parliament, for the 12th single-mandate constituency.
Until 2000 he was a part of the United Social Democratic Party, which stood next to the then-President Leonid Kuchma. However, Petro left the party and started his own, which he named Solidarity, and in the following year he was one of the integral participants in founding another Leonid Kuchma- loyal party, called Party of Regions.
In the early 2000s he chose not to support Leonid Kuchma, and became a campaign chief of Viktor Yushchenko’s Our Ukraine Bloc opposition faction, and once Yushchenko became President of Ukraine in 2005, Petro’s political career began to improve. He stayed in the Ukrainian parliament until 2007, when he became the head of the Council of Ukraine’s National Bank, a position in which he served until 2013, but before stepping down he returned to politics, by assuming the position of the Minister of Foreign Affairs in 2008, and served his country until 2011. Then he was made Minister of Trade and Economic Development in 2011, and for the next two years was prominent in bringing Ukraine closer to the European Union.
However, in early 2014, Ukrainian Revolution burst out, which resulted in the removal of the then president Viktor Yanukovich. Petro benefited from the revolution, as he became the elected President of Ukraine at the 2014 Presidential election, as he won 54.7% votes. However, since then Ukrainian and Russian relations have been strained as he has turned Ukraine more towards the European Union, accepting the Ukraine–European Union Association Agreement, and is putting all efforts to make the country a part of the European Union. Russia’s invasion of Crimea and support of separatists in eastern Ukraine has also created problems for Poroshenko and the country in general.
Regarding his personal life, Petro has been married to Maryna since 1984; the couple has four children together.
Petro is known for his devotion to Ukrainian Orthodox Church, and has made numerous donations towards churches and monasteries that belong to Ukrainian Orthodox Church.
Also, Petro has started the Petro Poroshenko Charity Foundation, through which has helped many causes.
