A native of Dartford, Pete went to King’s School in Rochester, Kent, and from an early age showed interest in music, firstly it was drums but he soon switched his interest to DJing, debuting at 15 years old as a DJ at his friends’ weddings. During his high school years, Pete was much of a booker, promoting clubs and bands with his friends, while also a part of the Kent “Soul Mafia”.
After school, Pete began using a van with a mobile disco, but he soon founded Family Function, his own club in Baker Street, London, and then launched his DJ career under the pseudonym Kickstart Roadshow, and then OHMS Roadshow. After some time Pete became a regular of Kings Lodge club in West Kingsdown, and then Hill Top, both in Kent. He became notable for such songs as Lonnie Liston Smith’s “Expansions” and Ritchie Cole’s “Groovin on a New York Afternoon”.
In the late ‘70s, he was hired as a staff writer for Blues & Soul Magazine, and after a year earned a promotion to features editor, a position he stayed in for three years, when he left the magazine to join the London Records as an A&R Manager. He was slowly building a name for himself, and listening to new music he came in touch with house music of Chicago, and in 1986 made a compilation album entitled “The House Sound of Chicago, Vol.
1”. Since then, he has become one of the most successful of British DJ’s, and worked with such clubs as Pacha then Eden nightclub in Sant Antoni de Portmany, Ibiza, and has performed in numerous events, including Wonderland which is his own creation, then has been a regular performer in Ibiza since its inception in 1991, and at the Together Winter Music Festival in London, all of which increased his wealth to a large degree.
When it comes to his career on radio, Pete first worked for Radio Invicta 92.4fm in the late ‘70s, and until joining BBC Radio, Pete also worked for Capital Radio.
It was in January 1991 that BBC Radio 1 launched the Essential Selection with Pete as the host of the show, which only increased his wealth and popularity. Thanks to his already successful career as a DJ, he was able to intertwine those two professions. Aside from “Essential Selection”, he also worked on the show “Essential Mix” on BBC Radio, while in 2012 he joined the iHeartRadio program “Evolution”, and later “Its All Gone Pete Tong”, further increasing his wealth.
