How rich is Paul Tagliabue? As of mid-2017, sources estimate a net worth that is at $20 million, mostly earned through success in the NFL. He previously practiced law, worked as a lawyer for the league, and was also Chairman of the Board of Directors of Georgetown University. All of these achievements have ensured the position of his wealth.
Paul received an athletic scholarship to play with the basketball team at Georgetown University. In 1961 he was the captain of the team, and graduated the following year as the president of his class; he was also a Dean’s List graduate and a Rhodes Scholar finalist. After graduation, he attended New York University School of Law, completing his studies in 1965, and four years later would practice law with the firm Covington & Burling, continuing until 1989.
Tagliabue also served as a lawyer for the NFL while working for Covington & Burling. In 1989, he was chosen by NFL owners to succeed Pete Rozelle as the league’s Commissioner; he expanded the NFL from 28 teams to 32 – in 1995, Charlotte and Jacksonville were added, and Cleveland in 1999, followed in 2002 by the Houston Texans. He also started a spring developmental league called the World League of American Football (WLAF), which included seven teams in North America and three teams in Europe, but it eventually shut down as it was unsuccessful in the US, but in 1995 it returned as NFL Europe with just six teams from Europe, but eventually made way for the NFL International Series. Paul also cancelled the games for the week of terrorist attacks of September 11, the first time the league had cancelled an entire week’s worth of games since the 1987 NFL Strike. It was later resumed, pushing out the schedule of the Super Bowl to a later date.
After his work as Commissioner, he then returned to Covington & Burling as a senior counsel. In 2008, he was selected to serve as the chairman of Georgetown University’s board of directors for three years. He was also appointed by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to investigate the New Orleans Saints bounty scandal. In 2014, Tagliabue was appointed to the executive board of DC2024, a group trying to bring the 2024 Summer Olympics to Washington D.C.
