Nile Rodgers Wiki Biography
Nile Gregory Rodgers was born 19 September 1952, in New York City, New York, USA. Nile rose to the prominence as the co-founder and leading guitarist of the music band Chic, which was one of the most popular during the disco era. Nile has also released several solo albums, though he was much more successful while producing and performing together with a number of artists including Sam Smith, Disclosure, Avicii, Pharrell Williams, Daft Punk, Madonna, Duran Duran, David Bowie, Diana Ross, Sister Sledge and many others. Rogers has been active in the entertainment industry since 1979.
So just how rich is Nile Rodgers? Sources have estimated that the net worth of Nile Rogers is as high as $70 million, with the majority of his wealth coming from creating, performing music and producing other artists.
Nile Rodgers began his career as a guitarist playing in recording sessions or on live performances with such artists as Parliament Funkadelis, Betty Wright, Ben E. King, Aretha Franklin, Maxine Brown, Apollo Theatre and Joe Raposo. This experience encouraged him to found his own band. In 1970, he and Bernard Edwards founded The Big Apple Band, which was a band of back-up musicians, and they performed with such bands as The Jackson 5, Ashford & Simpson, Luther Vandross and The Boys. Due to their professional skills they became popular, and wanted to continue the career of the band, so to avoid confusion with another musician, Walter Murphy, the leader of the band called The Big Apple Band, in 1977 the name of the group was changed to Chic.
Since foundation, they have worked under the labels Sumthing Else, Warner Bros, Atlantic and Buddah. During their long career – as despite short pauses the band is active up to date – they have released 21 single, eight studio albums, 12 compilation albums, and two live albums. The 70’s were the golden age of the band as their first three albums called “Chic” (1977), “C’est Chic” (1978) and “Risque” (1979) received certifications according to the sales in the United States of America, Canada and the United Kingdom. They have also peaked in the very high positions on the American R&B chart.
What is more, Nile Rodgers has released four solo albums: “Adventures In The Land Of The Good Groove” (1983), “B-Movie Matinee” (1985), “Outloud” (1987) and “Chic Freak and More Treats” (1996), however they were not as successful as those released with Chic. Another important source of Nile’s net worth is producing, which he has been involved in since 1978, helping many artists to pursue their dreams. He produced Sister Sledge, whose album “We Are Family” (1979) topped the American R&B chart and was certified Platinum in the USA and Gold in the United Kingdom, Diana Ross and her album “Diana” (1980) whose album has reached the same success, Debbie Harry and the album “Koo Koo” (1981) which was certified gold in the USA and Silver in the United Kingdom, and many other successful artists.
In 2011, Rodgers announced that he was ill with prostate cancer. Luckily, in 2013 he reported that everything had cleared concerning the illness. Nile is married to Nancy Hunt.

Nile Rodgers Quotes
- I know many people in the world who only have one David Bowie album and it’s Let’s Dance.
- In my way of composing, of feeling if something is grooving, it’s got to hit me in my soul. It doesn’t have to be overly intellectual or some complicated thing, it just has to be cool. I can’t explain it but I know it when I arrive there.
- As a child of beatnik parents, I learnt to depend on strangers and to be very self-sufficient and independent from an early age. Nothing felt daunting to me, and if it did that became energy.
- [on Madonna] When I used to introduce her to people she would say, ‘Hi, my name is Madonna’, I’m gonna be a superstar’. It sounds wacky but it was innocent, it was charming, and she really believed it. People think of her now as a hard woman, but in the old days she was charm personified. You couldn’t meet her and not fall in love with her instantly, ’cause she just knew how to work the room.
- [on Peter Gabriel] I’ve worked on three or four projects with him. We’ve never had a hit. Every time I say, “God, I let Peter Gabriel down”. He would say, “What are you talking about? It’s not your fault. I never wrote a song good enough”.
- Every record I have done was because I was a person’s friend. The only time we did not continue to be friends was if the record did not become a hit. If it did we became great friends.
- [on Rod Stewart] I think he can’t stand me. But he adored my partner Bernard, they did many records together. Rod, when he and I are together, is always hitting me below the belt. “Oh, it’s the ‘great’ Nile Rodgers.” I can never figure it out. What did I do to you? When you were in the Jeff Beck Group, you were my hero.
- David [David Bowie] sees the world through abstract but precise details. Before we wrote Let’s Dance, he walks in one day with a Little Richard album cover. Little Richard is wearing a red suit, and he’s getting into a red Cadillac, and his hair is out to there. And David says, “Nile. That’s rock’n’roll. That’s what I want my record to sound like.” Let’s Dance’s cover is a homage to that, and David’s hair is out to there.
