Nicholas Turturro Jr. was born on the 29th January 1962 in Brooklyn, New York USA, and is a film, television and theatre actor, perhaps best known for portraying Detective James Ramirez in “NYPD Blue” (1993-2000). His career started in 1989, when Spike Lee hired him to do the voice-over in “Do The Right Thing”.
Have you ever wondered how rich Nicholas Turturro is as of early 2017? According to authoritative sources, it has been estimated that Turturro’s net worth is as high as $5 million, an amount earned through his successful career in acting.
Nicholas Turturro was the youngest son of a jazz musician, Katherine, and a construction worker and carpenter, Nicholas Turturro Sr. He has two older brothers, John Turturro who is also a famous actor, and Ralph Turturro who is a musician. The family has Italian-American ancestry, as his father was an Italian immigrant, and his mother descended from Sicilians. The creative streak which runs in the family also extends to his cousin, Aida Turturro, as well as his nephews, Amedeo and Diego. Nicholas received his primary and secondary education in Catholic schools, after which he attended Adelphi University for two years, where he studied theatre. Having left school for family, he worked for a time as a doorman at the St. Moritz Hotel, where he got acquainted with several famous people, including musician Billy Joel.
Nicholas’s acting career took off in 1989 with some voice work, and appearing as an extra in Spike Lee’s comedy-drama film “Do The Right Thing”, on the recommendation of his brother, John. He would continue to work frequently with Lee, starting with the 1990 musical drama film “Mo’ Better Blues”, with co-stars were Denzel Washington and Wesley Snipes. Their other collaborations include the romantic drama “Jungle Fever” (1991), and epic biographical drama film “Malcolm X” (1992), portraying the life of the African-American activist.
Due to his dark complexion and robust looks, Nicholas was often hired to play mobsters and other criminal characters, as in the crime comedy film “Excess Baggage” (1997) with Alicia Silverstone, Benicio del Torro and Christopher Walken, and the television film “Witness to the Mob” (1998). However, he also appeared in critically acclaimed features, such as his brother’s directorial debut, “Mac” (1992), which won the Caméra d’Or Award at the Cannes Film Festival.
However, Nicholas achieved his greatest success on television, playing the role of Detective James Ramirez in the police procedural drama “NYPD Blue” (1993-2000) in the first seven out of the show’s twelve seasons. For this role, he won a Screen Actors Guild Award, besides being nominated for two Primetime Emmy Awards. He went on to have a rich film and television career after his departure from the show, starring in the 2001 crime film “The Shipment”, alongside Matthew Modine and Elizabeth Berkley, and appearing in numerous television films, such as “Monday Night Mayham” (2002) with his brother John, and “Three Wise Guys” (2005) with Tom Arnold and Judd Nelson. That same year, he played one of the convicts in the remake of the 1974 sports comedy “The Longest Yard” (2005).
Nicholas continued to act in television series as well, guest-starring in the spy action show “Burn Notice” (2009), and securing a recurring spot in the police procedural drama “Blue Bloods” (2010-2017).
Apart from his on-screen work, he has been very prolific on stage as well, taking part in productions such as “Wild Goose” and “Lusting After Popino’s Wife”, among others, which also improved his wealth.
Regarding his personal life, Nicholas has been married to Lissa Espinosa since 1996; the couple has two children together. Previously, he was married to Jami Bruno, from 1984 to 1995, with whom he has one child.
