While a small child, Calhoun moved to Los Angeles, California with her mother and brother. She soon became a teenage star, working in theater with famed director F. Gary Gray. She attended Los Angeles County High School for Arts and started her professional career in the 80s, making her film debut in the 1985 Dr. Lois Lee biopic “Children Of The Night”. In 1987 she was cast as Phyllis in the German comedy film “Bagdad Cafe”, which was quite successful at the box office, considerably adding to Calhoun’s net worth. In 1990 it was re-created as a television series, with Calhoun as part of the series too, along with Whoopi Goldberg. However, it was canceled after a year due to a low viewer numbers. Two years later Calhoun appeared in the CBS Schoolbreak Special “Different Worlds: A Story Of Interracial Love”, which earned her an Emmy nomination. Opportunities continued to come her way, and she landed roles in the 1992 film “The Jacksons: An American Dream” as the eldest sister Rebbie Jackson, and in the 1993 “The Ernest Green Story” as civil rights activist Minnijean Brown. Her net worth rose steadily.

In the years since, Calhoun has tackled a mix of television and film work. She had minor roles in the films “Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit” and “Jack the Bear”, and starred in the television series “Where I Live”. She also made guest appearances in the series “A Different World”, “The Jamie Foxx Show” and “The Wayans Bros”. Calhoun’s varied roles made her a recognized figure in the television and film industry, especially in Hollywood’s African-American community. Several other roles followed, and in 1998 she landed the role in the hit movie “The Players Club” as a stripper Ebony. The following year saw her in the first all-black film, the comedy/drama “The Best Man” as a bride-to-be Mia Morgan; her performance in the film brought her a nomination for NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture. Her roles in these two movies have been her most memorable ones to date, and have significantly contributed to her wealth.

During the early 2000s, Calhoun was seen in movies such as “Love and Basketball” and “Trois 2: Pandora’s Box”, the later bringing her the award for Best Performance by an Actress in The American Black Film Festival. Her other movies of the time include “Gang of Roses”, “Civil Brand”, “Friends and Lovers”, and the popular comedy/drama film “The Salon”. She also made guest appearances in a number of hit television shows, such as “Grey’s Anatomy”, “Everybody Hates Chris” and “Cold Case”. In 2009 she took the leading role as Ocean, a single mother who tries to reinvent her life, in the web series “Diary of a Single Mom”, and went on to reprise her role as Mia in the 2013 sequel “The Best Man Holiday”, improving her fortune once again.
