Was considered to be part of the “Golden Era” of motorcycling racing, the late 80s and the early 90s which included Eddie Lawson, Wayne Gardner, Kevin Schwantz, and Wanye Rainey all of them had great skills which made for some vary memorable moments
After the 1992 crash which almost cost him his life he had his right leg surgically attached to his left leg (which he was in danger of losing) to increase blood flow to speed up recovery
In 1992 he crashed and broke his right leg and missed four races while recovering from the injury. Left with a restricted range of movement his team created a hand-operated rear braking system to his Rothmans Honda so he could continue racing.

Toward the end of the year he announced his retirement due to injuries from his crash
