During the 1996 season Gundy became a staff member at Baylor, alongside with Larry Fedora, whom he is said to have had a good partnership with and whom he would recruit later on, then shortly after the season had finished, Gundy moved to Maryland as quarterbacks coach/passing game coordinator. In 2001 Gundy returned as offensive coordinator at Oklahoma State University, and three years later, succeeded Les Miles to become the head coach of the team. The results of the Cowboys were boosted during Mike Gundy’s second season, and the team was able to improve their offence, eventually finishing his second season with a 7-6 record, beating Alabama Crimson Tide in the Independence Bowl.
