Maurice Starr Wiki Biography
Maurice Starr was born as Larry Curtis Johnson in 1953 in Deland, Florida USA, and is a musician, songwriter, and record producer, probably best known as the creator of such bands as Con Funk Shun, New Edition, and New Kids on the Block. Starr’s career started in the mid-1970s.
Have you ever wondered how rich Maurice Starr is, as of early 2017? According to authoritative sources, it has been estimated that Starr’s net worth is as high as $10 million, an amount earned through his successful career in music. In addition to his work with notable bands, Starr has also released two solo albums, which improved his wealth.
Maurice Starr grew up in Florida before he moved to Boston, Massachusetts in the early ‘70s, where he was a member of The Johnson Brothers, and went on later with Michael Jonzun and Soni Jonzun to play in the Jonzun Crew. In 1980, Maurice released his debut studio album entitled “Flaming Starr”, which wasn’t commercially successful, and so instead of continuing a solo career, he decided to form a band which would play the songs he wrote.
In 1982, Starr founded the group called New Edition, and co-wrote and co-produced numerous hits such as “Candy Girl”, “Is This the End”, and “Popcorn Love”. Creative differences between him and the rest of the band members caused Starr to leave New Edition and create New Kids on the Block in 1984, a boy band consisting of five teenagers: Jordan Knight, Jonathan Knight, Danny Wood, Donnie Wahlberg, and Joey McIntyre. Maurice produced three albums: “New Kids on the Block” (1986), “Hangin’ Tough” (1988), and “Step by Step” (1990) – their debut album peaked at No. 25 on the US Billboard 200 and No. 6 on the UK Albums chart, while it achieved triple platinum status with over three million sales in the US alone. The band’s next release was even more successful, as it topped the US Billboard 200, and reached the No. 2 position on the UK Albums Chart. It achieved 8x platinum status in the US, and over two million album sales worldwide. “Step by Step” was also a huge hit, topping both US Billboard 200 and UK Albums charts, and achieving triple platinum status in the US, and platinum in Europe, with more than five million albums sold in total.
Maurice Starr later produced Perfect Gentlemen’s “Rated Pg” in 1990, Homework’s self-titled album in 1990, Tiffany’s “New Inside” in 1990, and Ana’s “Body Language”, also in 1990, which helped him to increase his net worth significantly. During his career in music, Starr earned Songwriter of the Year honours in 1989.
Regarding his personal life, Maurice Starr’s most intimate details such as marital status and the number of children are unknown, as he successfully manages to keep them out of the public eye.
