Maurice Ernest Gibb Wiki Biography
Maurice Ernest Gibb was born on 22 December 1949, in Douglas, Isle of Man, UK, and was a record producer, songwriter, and singer, but certainly best known to have been a part of the pop group the Bee Gees with his two brothers. He composed songs such as “On Time” and “Lay It on Me”. All of his efforts helped put his net worth to where it was prior to his passing.
How rich was Maurice Gibb? As of early-2017, sources estimate a net worth that is at $90 million, mostly earned through a successful career in the music industry, as the Bee Gees would become one of the most successful bands of all time. However, all of his achievements ensured the position of his wealth.
Maurice started his career in 1955, joining the rock and roll group the Rattlesnakes with his brothers and a few friends. After two years, they started to perform at a local cinema and gained local popularity. The following year, Gibb immigrated to Australia with his family and they would soon form the Bee Gees. The first single they made was “The Battle of the Blue and the Grey” which failed to chart, then he appeared as a multi-instrumentalist on the song “Claustrophobia”. They also started writing their own songs, and Maurice produced his first composition called “All By Myself”. He continued showcasing his compositions during their second album “Spicks and Specks”.
In 1967, they created the album “Bee Gees’ 1st” which drew praise from numerous critics and was compared to music from the Beatles. They then released their number one single “Massachusetts” and followed it up with the album “Horizontal”. In 1969, they released “Odessa” which featured Gibb’s vocals on the song “Suddenly”, followed by “Cucumber Castle” without Robin Gibb, and the remaining duo would record the song “Don’t Forget to Remember”. Later in the year, it was announced that the Bee Gees had broken up.
Gibb would continue his music career with a solo single “Railroad”, and he was meant to release a solo album, but it never got to that stage. In 1970, he created the supergroup “The Bloomfields”, but then reunited with the Bee Gees during the middle of the year. Later in his career, he continued to perform in various events and also re-recorded some of the Bee Gees hit songs. In 1986, the Bee Gees started recording for the album “E. S. P.” Their final studio album would be their 23rd entitled “This Is Where I Came In”.
For his personal life, it is known that Gibb had a relationship with Scottish pop singer Lulu, which drew a lot of publicity and they were eventually married in 1969; however they divorced in 1973 because of drinking problems and their careers. In 1975, Maurice married Yvonne Spenceley and they had two children. Their marriage lasted until his death. During this time, he also went into rehab to quell his drinking habit, which he battled throughout his adult life and eventually broke through the addiction through rehab. He died suddenly in 2003 due to complications from a twisted intestine. His brothers stopped performing as a group for a while after his death.
