Mary Willa Gummer Wiki Biography

Mary Willa Gummer was born on 3rd August 1983 in New York City, USA of part-Norwegian, English, German, Swiss and Irish ancestry and is an actress, probably best known for her work in the TV series “Emily Owens, MD” (2012 – 2013). She is also known for her family relations, as she is the daughter of the actress Meryl Streep and the sculptor Don Gummer, and the sister of the actresses Grace Gummer and Louisa Gummer, and the singer-songwriter Henry Wolfe. Mamie has been active in the entertainment industry since 1986.

It has been estimated by authoritative sources that the overall size of her wealth is as much as $10 million, as of the data presented in late 2017. Film and television are the main sources of Gummer’s modest fortune.

To begin with, the girl grew up in Salisbury in Connecticut, and was educated at Kent School. She then studied at Northwestern University in Chicago, graduating in 2005 with majors in communications and theatre.

Concerning her professional career, Mamie Gummer first appeared on screens as a child actress, at the age of three starring in “Heartburn” directed by Mike Nichols, alongside her mother and Jack Nicholson, but not again until 2005 after graduation, when she landed the lead role opposite Michael C. Hall in the play “Mr. Marmalade”, an off-Broadway production, for which performance, she received a Theatre World Award. Then Mamie Gummer played with co-star Kate Burton in the play “The Water’s Edge”, and was nominated for Lucille Lortel Award in the category of Outstanding Featured Actress. In 2006, she had a small role as a secretary in “The Hoax” by Lasse Hallström, so her net worth was now well established.

In the film “Evening” released in 2007, she played Lila Wittenborn during the scenes set in the 1950s, with her mother Meryl playing the character when the action moves to the 2000s. In 2008, she starred as Sally Smith Adams in the mini – series “John Adams”, and thereafter landed roles in series including “A Gifted Man” (2011) and “The Big C” (2012), then played the lawyer Nancy Crozier in the series “The Good Wife” (2010 – 2015), meantime in 2012 starring in the series “Emily Owens, MD”. In 2015 she played Nora, a Russian spy in the second season of “Manhattan”, and later that year she was back on stage, playing Jess in “Ugly Lies the Bone” by Lindsey Ferrentino, an off-Broadway production, for which role she was nominated for the Drama Desk Awards 2016 in the category of the Best Actress in a play.

Most recently, in 2017 Mamie played Alice in Michael Mitnick’s play “The Siegel” at the South Coast Repertory in Los Angeles, and appeared in the feature film “An Actor Prepares”, also in the main cast. Overall, all the above mentioned engagements in film, television and theatre have added significant sums to the size of Mamie Gummer’s net worth.

Finally, in the personal life of the actress, Gummer married Benjamin Walker in 2011, but the two divorced two years later, since when Mamie has been single.

Mary Willa Gummer Quotes

  • I’d like to learn how to cook. I’ve hauled around this big, old, heavy Martha Stewart cookbook in my suitcase to Cape Cod, L.A., Paris. I don’t know what possessed me.
  • My first day on the set of ‘John Adams’, I was just supposed to fly to Virginia for a costume fitting. But the director figured, why not shoot it, too? So they threw me into a dress that didn’t fit, gave me lines I hadn’t seen, in a dialect I didn’t know, and two screaming, arching infants.
  • I watched a lot of old television growing up – a lot of Nick at Nite. I watched ‘Rhoda’, ‘Mary Tyler Moore’, and ‘I Love Lucy.’ Growing up, I loved ‘My So Called Life’ and was devastated when that went off the air.
  • All the women that are first born daughters in my family are named Mary, but we’ve all been given nicknames. I don’t know how or why that started, but I’m nicknamed after my great-grandmother, who was Mamie. No one ever calls me Mary, except only if my husband is very serious about something.
