Mark Anthony Breland was born on the 11th May 1963, in Brooklyn, New York City USA, and is a former professional boxer, Los Angeles Olympic champion (1984), Munich World Champion (1982), and professional WBA world champion (1987, 1989-1990). He was active in the professional sport from 1984 to 1997.

Among other victories, he became the New York Golden Gloves Champion five times (1980 – 1984). In 1982, he won a Golden Gloves national title gold medal, beating Louis Howard in the final battle. A year later he won the title again after winning the decisive duel with James Mitchell. In the first half of 1982, he participated in the Munich World Championships. First he defeated Swedish Vesa Koskel, then Romanian Miyabi Ciobotar and Yosef Dani. In the semi-finals, he defeated the German representative Manfred Zielonka and in the final fight he won over Serik Konakbayev, becoming the world champion.

In 1984, Mark turned professional, after performing at the Los Angeles Olympic Games. He won the first fight with Canadian Wayne Gordon, then celebrated the victory against his rivals Carlos Reyes, Rudel Obreja and Genaro Léon. Luciano Bruno he defeated the semi-finals, and won the gold medal against An Young-Su, becoming the Olympic champion.

Overall, he fought 39 fights in the professional ring from 1984 to 1997. He won 35 of them, including 25 by knockout. At the beginning of 1987, he defeated Harold Volbrecht with TKO, becoming the WBA world welterweight champion. However, the title was lost on the 22nd August, as the result of a defeat by Marlon Starling. He recovered on the 4th February 1989, thanks to his victory against Korean, Seung-Soon Lee. In the summer of 1990, he lost the championship belt to Aaron Davis, by a KO. The following year he had 4 fights, 3 of which he won against Mexican Ariel Conde, American Henry Anaya Jr. and Mexican Julian Samaha. Yet, the fight with Mexican Jorge Vaca was lost. Afterwards, he won three fights against Americans Ricardo Smith, Buck Smith and Darryl Lattimore in 1996. In 1997, he won the fight against Bobby Butters, but after winning the fight against Rick Haynes on the 21st March 1997, Mark Breland announced his retirement from the professional sport.
