Lorne Michaels Wiki Biography

Lorne Lipowitz was born on 17th November 1944, in Toronto, Ontario Canada. He is an actor, comedian, producer and writer known under the name Lorne Michaels. Such popular shows as “Saturday Night Live” (1993 – present) and “The Tonight Show” (2014 – present) were created and produced by Lorne. The winner of numerous Emmy Awards received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and Canada’s Walk of Fame, and became an inductee into the Television Academy Hall of Fame and was honoured a member of the Order of Canada. This honourable personality began his career in the entertainment industry in 1968.

How rich is Lorne Michaels? During such a long-spanned career, Lorne has accumulated a net worth currently estimated at $350 million.

Michaels’ education includes a Bachelor’s degree in English from University College, University of Toronto. In the very beginning of his career he worked as a broadcaster and writer at CBC Radio, and then after moving to Los Angeles, USA he worked as a writer for “The Beautiful Phyllis Diller Show” (1968) and “Laugh-In” (1968).

In 1975, Lorne Michaels launched the live television sketch comedy and variety show “Saturday Night Live” (1975 – present). The show was created, and is produced by Michaels himself, and sometimes he works as a comedian of the show, too; his deadpan humour is much appreciated. The show is so successful that through its history it has received 156 nominations for Emmy Awards, 36 of them won. The show has the highest audience ratings, and has significantly contributes to Lorne’s net worth.

However, Michaels took a five-year break from producing “Saturday Night Live” and from 1980 till 1985 he had left this job to Jean Doumanian (1980–81) and Dick Ebersol (1981 – 1985). During that time Lorne produced a sketch comedy “The Kids in the Hall” (1980 – 1985) and created one more sketch comedy show entitled “The New Show” (1984). Lorne also starred in the mockumentary film “The Canadian Conspiracy” (1985) directed by Robert Boyd. Again, all these projects have added to Lorne’s net worth.

Even though he came back to produce the “Saturday Night Live” show, he worked as an executive producer with many other television shows and series, for example, “Where in Time Is Carmen Sandiego” (1996–1998), “30 Rock” (2006–2013), “Up All Night” (20011–2013) and others. Currently, he produces “Portlandia” (2011–present), “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” (2014–present) and “Late Night with Seth Meyers” (2014–present), not to mention his most successful “Saturday Night Live” (1975 – present) show. Lorne’s net worth also benefited from these works.

Furthermore, Michaels has produced a number of feature films, including “Nothing Lasts Forever” (1984), “Three Amigos” (1986), “Wayne’s World” (1992), “Lassie” (1994), “Kids in the Hall: Brain Candy” (1996), “A Night at the Roxbury” (1998), “The Ladies Man” (2000), “Mean Girls” (2004), “Baby Mama” (2008), “The Guilt Trip” (2012), “The Taliban Shuffle” (2016) and many other films. Of course, Lorne’s net worth grew steadily from income from these films.

In addition to all the above mentioned awards and honours, Michaels received Mark Twain Prize for American Humor (2004), Governor General’s Performing Arts Award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement (2006), Webby Award for Film & Video Lifetime Achievement (2008) and Personal Peabody Award (2013).

In his personal life, Lorne Michaels became a US citizen in 1987. He has been married three times: his first wife was Rosie Shuster (1967 – 1980) and the second was Susan Forristal (1984 – 1987), with both marriages ending in divorce. In 1991, he married his third wife Alice Barry. Michaels has fathered three children.

Lorne Michaels Quotes

  • [observation on his career, 2015] To use a tennis metaphor, after a certain point you can’t keep charging the net, and you fall back to the lob game. But you can still win.I think I care just as much as I did at the beginning, and I think – at lots of levels – I’m better at it now. You learn to trust signs that something isn’t going to work earlier than you used to, or that this person is talking nonsense earlier than you used to, and you’re confident enough to to say, “We’ve got it. Let’s move on”.
  • [on John Travolta] John is the perfect star for the 1970s. He has this strange androgynous quality, this all-pervasive sexuality. Men don’t find him terribly threatening. And women, well …
