When the Four Tops first recorded one of their biggest hits “Reach Out (I’ll Be There), Stubbs was uncomfortable with the key the song was written in; voicing that it was too high. The Producrers claimed to have understand yet kept the key the way it was in order for Stubbs to portray the range of emotion that they were looking for in his performance.
He had five children with his wife, Clineice: daughter, Deborah; daughter, Beverly; son, Raymond; daughter, Kelly; and son, Levi Jr.
The Four Tops were awarded a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for Recording at 7060 Hollywood Boulevard in Hollywood, California.

The Four Tops signed with Motown Records in 1963. They had 20 Top-40 hit songs over the next 10 years.
In 1953, Stubbs, Abdul ‘Duke’ Fakir, Lawrence Payton and Renaldo Benson formed a group called “The Four Aims”, and signed a contract with Chess Records. They later changed the name to The Four Tops to avoid confusion with The Ames Brothers.
