Lawrence Francis O’Donnell, Jr. was the son of Lawrence Francis O’Donnell, Sr., an attorney, and Frances Marie, an office manager. Lawrence went to St. Sebastian’s School and matriculated in 1970, and during his time there he was the captain of the baseball team. He later studied at Harvard, from where he graduated in 1976 with a major in economics.

O’Donnell started as a writer in 1977, and six years later he published his first book named “Deadly Force”, a story about police brutality and wrongful death.
