Laurel is the only girl child in the family, and is also the youngest, having two older brothers. She grew up in her hometown, and after high school enrolled at the University of North Carolina, from which she obtained a degree in Performance Communication. During her university years, Laurel made numerous appearances in Chapel Hill and Raleigh, slowly nourishing her acting skills. She later enrolled at UCLA to study painting and sculpting, continuing also at The San Francisco Art Institute.
Following her graduation from the University of North Carolina, Laurel moved to Chicago, where she became a part of the Piven Theatre Workshop. She took acting lessons under John Lynn in Los Angeles, and soon secured her first film roles, making her debut in 1995 as Randy Dean in the romantic drama “The Incredibly True Adventure of Two Girls in Love”, and then in 1996 portrayed Francis Bodean in the drama “Blossom Time”, directed by David Orr. Until the end of the ‘90s, she made several more notable appearances, including in such films as the Academy Award- nominated drama “Boogie Nights” (1997), starring Mark Wahlberg, Julianne Moore and Burt Reynolds, and comedy drama “Tumbleweeds” (1999), with Janet McTeer, Kimberly J. Brown and Jay O. Sanders in the lead roles.
She continued in the same rhythm in the early 2000s, appearing in the drama “The Rising Place” (2001), and horror thriller “Alone” (2002), then to be given the role of Tina Kennard in the TV series “The L Word” (2004-2009). She became solely focused on the role of Tina until the series end, and then portrayed RaeAnne Colvin in the TV series “Gigantic” (2010), which is her last known role to date.
Since then she has been focusing on painting, and in 2012 had her first exhibition Coeur Libre, followed by Free Falling soon afterwards. The next year she had one more show, “All the World Inside”, held at Palazzo, Italia, and in Berlin, Germany. Little by little, Laurel started becoming more successful in painting, which resulted in her winning 1st Place in Discipline Painting at the 2014 Contemporary Art Biennale of Argentina.
