Born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, Kramer came from a small Jewish family. During his high school years, he also started becoming open with his sexuality, and so sexually involved with his male friends. He later attended Yale University, where he also experienced depression for feeling like being the only gay person in the school. However, he was able to overcome his depression, and graduated with a degree in English.
Kramer’s career started at 23 when he got a job at Columbia Pictures working as a teletype operator. With his persistence, he was moved into the story department, where he was able to rework some scripts. One of his earliest works was “Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush”, and other movies that he also worked on included “Women in Love” and “Lost Horizon”. His early years in the film industry helped his career and his net worth considerably.
In 1973, Kramer started creating stage plays, and decided to integrate themes of homosexuality into his works. His works as a playwright include “Sissies’ Scrapbook”, “A Minor Dark Age”, “The Normal Heart”, “Just Say No, A Play about a Farce”, “The Destiny of Me” and “The Furniture of Home”. - [on the Pavilion on Fire Island] You don’t separate the Pavilion from other parts that burned down. It’s like St. Tropez] it’s one of the great watering spas of social culture. It is the gray place to go during the summer, and it has been for many years, since I was very young. I hope they can get it ready for next summer.
