Kurt Cobain Wiki Biography
Kurt Donald Cobain was born on 20 February 1967, in Aberdeen, Washington State, USA, of Irish, English, Scottish and German ancestry. Kurt was one of the most popular musicians of his day, perhaps best known for being a member of the legendary band called “Nirvana”. During his career, Kurt and his band were nominated for and won various awards, including American Music Award, Grammy Award, MTV Video Music Award, BRIT Award and others. Despite the huge success that the band had, Kurt struggled with his personal problems and took his own life in 1994, when he was only 27 years old. The world lost a very talented musician who had added a lot to the music industry. There is no doubt that Kurt will be remembered for a long time by many fans of his work.
So how rich was Kurt Cobain? Sources have estimated that Kurt Cobain’s net worth was $100 million, mainly gained through his successful career as a musician. Many songs released by “Nirvana” became hits and are even famous nowadays. Unfortunately, the music world lost this talented personality too soon. Sadly, there is no chance that Kurt’s net worth will become higher.
Kurt cobains parents were a motor mechanic (father Donald) and a waitress (mother Wendy), but relatives were musicians and apparently encouraged Kurt in his singing and playing, even from when he was 2 years old. Later he also learned how to play a piano. Kurt listened to such artists as “The Beatles”, “Ramones”, Terry Jack and others. Sadly, Kurt’s childhood was not very perfect as his parents divorced when he was seven years old. This influenced his life a lot and changed his character, becoming very rebellious as a teenager. When Kurt was 14 years old he received a guitar as a gift from his uncle. Soon he learned how to play different covers of famous songs and even wrote his own songs. In 1987 Kurt and Krist Novoselic decided to form a band and called it “Nirvana”. In 1989 they released their first album, entitled “Bleach” and this had a huge impact on the growth of Kurt Cobain’s net worth. Later the band released two more albums: “Nevermind” and “In Utero”. These albums gained a lot of success and “Nirvana” became one of the most famous bands at that time. Kurt and his band was able to make themselves known all over the world and even now “Nirvana” is considered to be one of the most popular bands.
While talking about Kurt’s personal life, he had several relationships. At first he had a relationship with Tracy Marander and later with Tobi Vail. Both these relationships did not go so well. In 1990 Kurt met Courtney Love. In 1992 the couple married and in the same year their daughter Frances Bean was born. Despite his professional success and the family he had, Kurt had many personal problems and was not able to get over them. He tried to kill himself several times, and although his wife Love tried to help him, all her attempts were futile as he shot himself in 1994. Sadly, the world lost a young and talented personality.

Kurt Cobain Quotes
- I would like to get rid of the homophobes, racists and sexists in our audience. I know they’re out there, and it really bothers me. So at this point I have a request for our fans: If any of you in any way hate homosexuals, people of a different color, or women, please do this one favor for us… Don’t come to our shows and don’t buy our records.
- None of you will ever know my true intent.
- [on his Irish ancestry] They came from County Cork, which is a really weird coincidence, because when we toured Ireland, we played in Cork and the entire day I walked around in a daze. I’d never felt more spiritual in my life. It was the weirdest feeling and I have a friend who was with me who could testify to this. I was almost in tears the whole day. Since that tour, which was about two years ago, I’ve had a sense that I was from Ireland.
- It just so happens that there’s a bunch of people that are concerned with what I have to say. I find that frightening at times because I’m just as confused as most people.
- I didn’t know how to deal with success. If there was a Rock Star 101, I would have liked to take it. It might have helped me.
- I never wanted to sing. I just wanted to play rhythm guitar – hide in the back and just play.
- When I heard the Pixies for the first time, I connected with that band so heavily I should have been in that band – or at least in a Pixies cover band.
- The music comes first. Lyrics are second. (When asked how he writes his songs.)
- If I went to jail, at least I wouldn’t have to sign autographs.
- I’m not gay, but I wish I was just to piss off the homophobes.
- “I stared into his eyes and told him that I thought he was a respectable human. I did tell him straight out that I think his band still sucks.” – on his encounter with Pearl Jam lead singer Eddie Vedder.
- [To ‘Weird Al” Yankovic’, when asked for permission to do a parody of “Smells Like Teen Spirit”] “It isn’t going to be about food, is it?”.
- I think people who glamorize drugs are f**king *ssholes and if there’s hell they’ll go there.
- I’d rather be hated for who I am than loved for who I am not.
- I’m not a death rocker, and I don’t wear black.
- I’m not well-read, but when I read, I read well.
- Wanting to be someone else is a waste of the person you are.
Kurt Cobain Important Facts
- During a Nirvana concert, he witnessed a girl being groped in the audience. Without missing a beat, he threw his guitar to the ground (a Martin D-18E electric guitar, one of the rarest electric guitars ever made and worth a significant amount of money), dived into the audience and angrily confronted the man who groped the woman. Upon returning to the stage, Cobain and the other band members openly mocked the man as he was being forcibly led out by security.

- The song “Mighty K.C.” by For Squirrels was written about him.
- Was runner-up for Best Songwriter of 1994 in “Rolling Stone” magazine’s annual critics’ poll. He ranked between Freedy Johnston and Sam Phillips, who placed 1st and 3rd in the poll, respectively.
- Samples of Cobain-penned song lyrics: “I’m a negative creep and I’m stoned” (“Negative Creep,” 1989)… “She keeps it pumpin’ straight to my heart” (“Aneurysm,” 1990)… “And I forget just why I taste/oh yeah, I guess it makes me smile/I found it hard, it’s hard to find/oh well, whatever, nevermind” (“Smells Like Teen Spirit,” 1991)… “My heart is broke/but I have some glue/help me inhale/and mend it with you/we’ll float around/and hang out on clouds/then we’ll come down/and have a hangover” (“Dumb,” 1993)… “I’ll keep fighting jealousy/until it’s fucking gone” (“Lounge Act,” 1991)… “The animals I’ve trapped/have all become my pets” (“Something in the Way,” 1991)… “Things have never been so swell/I have never failed to feel pain” (“You Know You’re Right,” 1994)… “All in all is all we all are” (“All Apologies,” 1993).
- Named 12th greatest guitar player of all-time by Rolling Stone magazine in 2003.
- Played a trick on the MTV brass when he began Nirvana’s appearance at the 1992 MTV Video Music Awards by playing the first few chords of the song “Rape Me” and singing the first verse. He then quickly switched to playing “Lithium”, the song the band had agreed to play in the show as a compromise with MTV executives. Cobain had wanted to sing the then-new song “Rape Me”, while MTV’s bigwigs wanted the band to lead off the show with their signature song, “Smells Like Teen Spirit”. The two sides settled on a mid-show rendition of “Lithium”.
- Recent biography is written by Charles Cross, an influential icon in the Seattle music scene. The biography, “Heavier Than Heaven”, is said to be the most comprehensive biography of one of the most mysterious artists in music history.
- The original title for “Heart-Shaped Box” was “Heart-Shaped Coffin.”
- The Nirvana song “Scentless Apprentice” is based on a book called “Perfume” by Patrick Süskind.
- His most popular songs include “About a Girl”, “Been a Son”, “Negative Creep”, “Aneurysm”, “Dive”, “Sliver”, “Smells Like Teen Spirit”, “Lithium”, “In Bloom”, “Polly”, “Something in the Way”, “Heart-Shaped Box”, “Rape Me”, “Dumb”, “Pennyroyal Tea”, “All Apologies” and “You Know You’re Right” (written and recorded shortly before his death but not officially released until October 2002).
- According to his widow, Courtney Love, Cobain left behind 109 unreleased, recorded songs when he died in 1994. Some are just song fragments, some music “collages”, and about eight are acoustic numbers that Love deems good enough for release. One song, “Stinking of You”, which he wrote with Love, includes the line “Stinking of you…I don’t care if my life is shattered, it’s my point of view…”
- Half-brother: Chad Cobain.
- Half-sister: Brianne O’Conner.
- Sister: Kim.
- Was of Irish, English, German, and French ancestry.

- His songs have been covered by Tori Amos, Sinéad O’Connor, Herbie Hancock, and Branford Marsalis.
- After his death, many musicians recorded tribute songs to him. Some of these include R.E.M.’s “Let Me In”, Patti Smith’s “About a Boy”, Neil Young’s “Sleeps with Angels”, “Tearjerker” by Red Hot Chili Peppers, “Shotgun Suicide” by El Duce, “Kurt Cobain” by Wesley Willis and Cher’s “The Fall” (which she wrote after learning about his suicide and included on her album “Not.Comm.ercial”, which was for sale only on the Internet). His death is referred to in the lyrics of the Badly Drawn Boy song “You Were Right”. He is also mentioned in the songs “Californication” by Red Hot Chili Peppers and “Innocent” by Our Lady Peace.
- Although Cobain’s death was officially ruled a suicide, certain aspects about his death have led to speculation that he was murdered: He had entirely too much heroin in his system at the time of his death to have been able to operate a shotgun; he would have been incapacitated within seconds of injecting it. Also, the so-called “suicide note” may have been a letter to his fans expressing his desire to quit both Nirvana and the music business altogether. In addition, one of Cobain’s credit cards was being used a few days AFTER his death.
- Guitar and vocals for the legendary grunge band Nirvana.
- Ashes were scattered in McLane Creek in Olympia, Washington. A handful were scattered under the willow at the front of 171 Lake Washinton Boulevard in Seattle, and another handful was given to a Buddhist to make a “tsatsu” (a memorial sculpture).
- Daughter, Frances Bean Cobain, born. [August 1992]
