How much is the net worth of Joe Smith? It has been estimated by authoritative sources that the overall size of his wealth is as much as $25 million, as of the data given in early 2017, largely from his career as a basketballer.
After playing for the University of Maryland for two years, he was named Naismith College Player of the Year and joined the NBA Draft in 1995. He was first chosen by the Golden State Warriors. Players who were drawn shortly after were among future all-stars – Antonio McDyess, Jerry Stackhouse, Rasheed Wallace and Kevin Garnett. The athletic forward finished his first season with 15.3 points and 8.7 rebounds per game, and in the award ceremony for the NBA Rookie of the Year Awards, Smith landed second behind Damon Stoudamire, and was appointed to the NBA All-Rookie First Team. The following year, he improved his point yield to 18.7 points per game, then during the season 1997 – 1998 he was traded to the Philadelphia 76ers. In Philadelphia, his scores fell to an average of 10 points and 4.5 rebounds per game, and after the Lockout in 1999, he signed a contract with the Minnesota Timberwolves. There Smith and Kevin Garnett formed a good forward team, and as it turned out later, Wolves manager Kevin McHale promised Smith a new multi-million dollar contract later, when he signed under market conditions. Thus, the management of the Wolves wanted to create financial scope in the salary cap, in order to be able to sign further players. Because of this scandal, the Timberwolves were sentenced to a high monetary penalty, and did not have any first draft pick for the next five years.
Joe Smith was released after the scandal, and signed a new contract with the Detroit Pistons. After a successful year at the Pistons, Smith returned to the Wolves and remained in the team until 2003, when he joined the Milwaukee Bucks, where he scored 10 points and 6 rebounds per game in three seasons. During the 2006 – 2007 season, he played for the Denver Nuggets, before moving back to the 76ers with Andre Miller in exchange for Allen Iverson. After the season, he signed a contract with the Chicago Bulls, and afterwards, several assignments followed for teams where he filled the role of the supplementary player. After moving from the Bulls to the Cleveland Cavaliers, a trade followed to the Oklahoma City Thunder, but he signed again two days later with the Cavaliers. After the season, he continued on to play for the Atlanta Hawks and New Jersey Nets, before the Nets transferred him to the Los Angeles Lakers in 2010. At the Lakers, Smith played in the remaining 12 games. After that, he was no longer bound by a contract and has not been committed by any team since.
In addition to playing basketball, Smith was also active as a musician, and released a rap album under the pseudonym Joe Beast. In the film “Rebound: The Legend of Earl “The Goat” Manigault” Smith plays the basketball legend Connie Hawkins, adding somewhat to his net worth.
Finally, in the personal life of Joe Smith, he married Allie LaForce in 2015.
