José Fernández was born on 31st July 1992, in Santa Clara, Cuba and was a baseball player in the position of pitcher representing the team of the Miami Marlins in Major League Baseball (MLB). He was elected the Rookie of the Year 2013 in the National League. Fernandez had been playing baseball professionally from 2013, until 2016 when he passed away.

In 29 starts, he had 16 wins and eight losses, with an ERA of 2.86 and 253 strikeouts, which was a new club record. He had the most strikeouts per 9 innings pitched (12.49) in the National League.

With only about one week left of the season he died in a boating accident on 25th September 2016 in Miami Beach, Florida – his club Miami Marlins chose not to play his match the same day.
