His career started in the mid- 1980s.
Have you ever wondered how rich Johnny Lever is, as of early 2017? According to authoritative sources it has been estimated that Lever’s net worth is as high as $30 million, an amount earned through his successful acting career.
Johnny is the son of Prakash Rao Janumala and Karunamma Janumala, who are a Telugu Christian family. Johnny has four siblings, and they grew up in Mumbai’s King’s Circle area.
He received his education through Andhra education society English high school, but was forced to drop out of studies due to financial troubles that struck his family. He then worked several odd jobs to support himself and contribute to the family. Some of the jobs included selling pens on the streets of Mumbai, while singing and dancing to the songs of Bollywood stars. Furthermore, he lived in Yakutpura, where he learned the unique style of comedy acting. He worked at a Hindustan Lever Ltd company, and while there copied senior officers so that the workers came up with the name Johnny Lever, and he decided to keep the name, instead of John Rao.
Johnny then focused more on comedy, and performed in several musical shows, only to join the group of Kalyanji-Anandji, which is a renowned musical duo in India, and started touring with the group. Little by little, his name became more popular, which resulted in meeting actor Sunil Dutt, who offered him a film role in “Dard Ka Rishta” in 1982, which marked the start of his professional career.
Three years later, Johnny was cast in a notable role in the film “Tum Par Hum Qurban”, and then in 1987 starred in the film “Jalwa” with Naseeruddin Shah. By the end of the ‘80s, Johnny had made a name for himself with roles in such films as “Kasam” (1988), “Kala Bazaar” (1989), and Bhutacha Bhau” (1989), which certainly increased his wealth.
In the ‘90s, he really reached stardom, with roles in the films “Baazigar” (1993), which became one of his most memorable films, and then only increased his popularity with films “Judaii” (1997), and “Baadshah” (1999), which also further increased his net worth. Also in the ‘90s he performed one of his most memorable live show performances, imitating the “king of pop”, Michael Jackson at the 1999 Filmfare Awards.
Johnny continued successfully into the new millennium and with roles in “Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham…” (2001), and “Koi… Mil Gaya” (2003) only cemented his place at the top of the Bollywood scene. In recent years he starred in the Tulu film “Rang” (2014), and in 2016 he featured in the Hindi comedy “Hotel Beautifool”. Furthermore, he appeared in the romantic “Machine” (2017), and will appear in the film “Munna Michael”, which is set for release late in 2017.
Regarding his personal life, Johnny has been married to Sujatha since 1984; the couple has two children together.
Johnny is Christian, and has often spoke about his transition in interviews, stating that he was always a religious man, and that one thing changed his life; his son was diagnosed with cancer and Johnny turned to God for help. Ten days after initial diagnosis, Johnny’s son was magically cured. From then, Johnny started practicing Christianity.
