John William Cummings Wiki Biography
John William Cummings was born on the 8th October 1948 in Long Island, New York USA, and was best known as Johnny Ramone, a guitarist of the punk rock band The Ramones, and the only original member who had remained in the composition until the end of their music career. In 2003, Rolling Stone magazine placed Johnny in the list of 16 greatest guitarists of all time. Ramone was active in the entertainment industry from 1974 to 1996. He passed away in 2004.
How rich was the musician? It has been calculated by authoritative sources that the overall size of Johnny Ramone net worth is as much as $10 million, as of the data presented in the middle of 2017. Music was the major source of Ramone’s wealth.
To begin with, the boy grew up in the neighbourhood of Forest Hills in Queens, New York City. During his teenage years, he was particularly interested in rock music, and played with Thomas Erdelyi (future Tommy Ramone) in the garage rock band Tangerine Puppets. Aside from the music, he was also interested in baseball and was fascinated by military discipline. He spent two years in a military school.
Concerning his professional career, the punk rock band Ramones was formed in 1974 by John Cummings, Thomas Erdelyi, Douglas Colvin and Jeffrey Hyman. From 1974 to 1996, Johnny Ramone was the band’s only guitarist. Although he was not a composer of the songs of the band, Johnny Ramone particularly influenced many generations of punk bands by his style of play. Using barred chords and the palm mute technique, the guitarist offered a clean and abrupt, but very effective sound, which became one of the trademarks of the band’s music, and later influenced punk music overall. Nevertheless, if recognized for his style of play, Johnny Ramone was also a source of conflicts and tensions within the group – even if he did not compose, he would impose himself as the leader of the group, and showed a very authoritarian, almost dictatorial attitude. He imposed strict dress codes, his decisions as well as on many aspects of the life of the group not only musical directions. For example, he refused to record the song “Chinese Rock” (written by Dee Dee Ramone) because it spoke too explicitly about drugs.
Throughout their career, the band The Ramones published 14 studio albums, several compilations and live albums, making a total of 21 albums and of 212 songs. Despite their fame, the group only achieved two gold-certified albums – “Ramones Mania” compilation album (1988) and their debut album “Ramones” (1976). Only two of their albums managed to enter the top 50 on the US Billboard, and none of their singles were commercially successful. The band was disbanded in 1996, then in 2002, inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
Finally, in the personal life of Johnny, he was married to Linda Ramone from 1984. Johnny Cummings died in his sleep at his home in Los Angeles, from prostate cancer. He died at the age of 55. on the 15th September 2004 in Los Angeles, California His body was cremated and his ashes inserted into the pedestal of his statue at Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles, near Dee Dee Ramone.
