John Sykes Wiki Biography
Born John James Sykes on the 29th July 1959, in Reading, Berkshire, England, he is a guitarist, vocalist and songwriter best known to the world for being the lead guitarist of several influential rock bands, including Thin Lizzy and Whitesnake among others. His career started in 1980.
Have you ever wondered how rich John Sykes is, as of early 2017? According to authoritative sources, it has been estimated that Sykes’ net worth is as high as $10 million, an amount earned through his successful career as a musician. Apart from success with bands, John has also released several solo albums, including “Out of My Tree” (1995), “Loveland” (1997), and “Nuclear Cowboy” (2000), the sales of which have also improved his wealth.
Little information is available about John’s early years and education. He lived in his hometown with his two siblings until he was 14 years old, and then moved to Ibiza where he lived with his uncle.
His musical career began in 1980 when he joined the heavy metal band Tygers of Pan Tang. He stayed in the band until 1982 and oversaw the release of two albums, “Spellbound” (1981), and “Crazy Nights” (1982), while he is also credited on two tracks of their fourth album “The Cage” (1982).
He left the Tygers of Pan Tang to join John Sloman’s new band Badlands, unfortunately the project was short-lived, and they didn’t manage to release any material before disbandment.Anyways, John soon found new engagements, with Phil Lynott and his Thin Lizzy. Although John only managed to record one album with the band before it dissolved, he continued to work closely with Phil and the two went on a European tour, which was recorded and released under the title “Live in Sweden”.
After Thin Lizzy and a short stint with Phil, John joined Whitesnake and worked with David Coverdale and the rest of the band until 1987, when David decided to fire the entire band. He was featured on Whitesnake’s most successful album entitled “Whitesnake”, which was sold in more than eight million copies just in USA, and significantly increased John’s net worth. The album featured some of the Whitesnake’s most notable songs to date, such as “Still of the Night”, “Here I Go Again”, Give Me All Your Love”, and “Is This Love”.
After the disbandment of Whitesnake, John put all efforts into starting his own band, and together with drummer Carmine Appice and bassist Tony Franklin founded Blue Murder, and added Ray Gillen as singer. However, following the demo, John assumed singing duties, on the suggestion of A&R executive John Kalonder. Unfortunately, the band didn’t reach the popularity John was looking for, and after three albums, John continued on his own.
So far he has released four albums, and is working on his fifth, but has also reformed Thin Lizzy with other members, Scott Gorham, Darren Wharton and Brian Downey. The new resurgence of Thin Lizzy existed from 1996 to 2009, and they released one live album “One Night Only” (2000).
Regarding his personal life, John married Jennifer Brooks in the mid- ‘80s, but the couple divorced in 1999. They have three children together.
