John Cameron Fogerty Wiki Biography
John Cameron Fogerty was born on 28th May 1945, in Berkeley, California USA, and is a songwriter, singer and guitarist, who became famous at the end of the ‘60s, as the lead singer and lead guitarist for the band Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR).
So just how rich is John Fogerty? Sources estimate the musician’s net worth is $70 million, being number 35 on the list of the richest lead singers in the world. Fogerty has made most of his money in the music industry, both as a guitarist and as a solo recording artist. He has been making money from album sales, royalties, concerts, and other appearances. Fogerty is number 40 in the 100 Greatest Guitarists as listed by Rolling Stone magazine.
John Fogerty graduated from El Cerrito High School, the same place as all the Creedence Clearwater Revival members. During his school years, he took guitar lessons from Barry Olivier, known as the creator and producer of the Berkeley Folk Festival.
John Fogerty started performing in a band in the late ‘50s, when together with his brother, Tom Fogerty, and with Doug Clifford and Stu Cook, formed Tommy Fogerty and the Blue Velvets. A few years later, the group changed its name into “The Golliwogs”, but their project didn’t have too much success.
In 1967, the band changed its name again, to “Creedence Clearwater Revival”, with John taking his brother’s place as lead singer. The band’s initial success came thanks to covers of the hits “I Put a Spell on You” and “Suzie Q”. One year later, in 1968, they released their first self-titled album as CCR.
From 1969 to 1972, they released another six albums, which include “Bayou Country”, “Willy and the Poor Boys”, “Pendulum”, and “Mardi Gras”. The band sold millions of albums, but John Fogerty’s success as lead singer and guitarist generated a series of tensions inside the band, and in 1972 the members decided to break up.
John Fogerty started a new project, a one-man band called “The Blue Ridge Rangers”. During his solo career, the musician has released nine studio albums, including “The Blue Ridge Rangers” (1973), “John Fogerty” (1975), “Eye of the Zombie” (1986), “Revival” (2007), and “The Blue Ridge Rangers Rides Again” (2009), album sales of which have brought the musician millions. According to the media, most of his albums made over $2 million from sales in their first year, which added important earnings to John Fogerty’s net worth. The singer is also making money from compilation albums of Creedence Clearwater Revival, and royalties.
Ranked number 72 by the Rolling Stones magazine in the list of the Greatest Singers, John Fogerty is focusing on his solo career. He has been fighting his old band in a series of lawsuits for performance right over Creedence Clearwater Revival music.
In 2015, he made several appearances in the television show “The Voice” as a mentor. He is also planning to publish an autobiography, called “Fortunate Son: My Life, My Music”.
In his personal life, John Fogerty married Martha Paiz in 1965; the couple had three children butdivorced in the ‘70s. The musician has been married to Julie Lebiedzinski since 1991. He lives in a mansion in Thousand Oaks, California, which he bought for $8.9 million in 2013. In 2014, John Fogerty sold one of his properties, a house in Beverly Hills, for $18.6 million.

John Cameron Fogerty Quotes
- [When asked if he’s talked to his former CCR bandmates] How do you shake hands with a rattle snake?
- When I was a young guy, none of the people I liked got Grammys. That’s just the way it was. They honored a lot of great people, but they just weren’t in my musical universe. Then something changed 15, 20 years ago, where they started kind of getting a little hipper, honoring rock and pop and even rap. It seems to be not just reserved for old, gray white men anymore, kind of like our politics.
John Cameron Fogerty Important Facts
- Inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame on June 9, 2005, alongside Robert B. Sherman, Richard M. Sherman, Bill Withers, Steve Cropper, David Porter and Isaac Hayes.
- Has English and Irish ancestry.
- When Creedence Clearwater Revival was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, he refused to perform with Stu Cook and Doug Clifford. The pair were barred from the stage, and Fogerty performed with a band featuring Bruce Springsteen and Robbie Robertson.
- He was awarded a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for Recording at 7000 Hollywood Boulevard in Hollywood, California.
- On July 4, 1987, he was the closing act, performing 8 of his hit songs, on an all day music marathon “Welcome Home” (Vietnam Veterans). This star-studded charitable event was telecast live from Washington, D.C. on HBO US Cable TV.
- Younger brother of Tom Fogerty.
- In 1968, with Creedence Clearwater Revival, he opened for The Turtles at the Filmore East in New York City.
- Shortly after the release of his solo album “Centerfield”, he was sued for plagiarizing himself. The lawsuit claimed that his song “The Old Man Down the Road” shared the same chorus as “Run Through the Jungle”, a song from his CCR days. Fogerty ended up winning his case, by proving that many artists have very distinct styles that can make different compositions sound similar to unfamiliar ears.
- Despite their great success, his band, Creedence Clearwater Revival, never had a #1 hit on Billboard’s Top-10 chart! They had 9 songs on the chart, with 5 of them peaking only at #2.
