Joe Weider Wiki Biography

Josef Edwin Weider, simply known as Joe Weider, was a famous Canadian athlete and enterpreneur, as well as a bodybuilder. Joe Weider is perhaps best known as a co-founder of the competitive bodybuilding organization called “International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness”, shortened as IFBB. Weider co-founded the company with his brother Ben Weider in 1946 and since then IFBB has become the highest level competitive bodybuilding organization in the whole world. Weider’s other large contribution to the bodybuilding sport is the creation of some of the best known bodybuilding contests, namely “Ms. Olympia”, “Masters Olympia” and “Mr. Olympia” competitions.

A famous bodybuilder, how rich is Joe Weider? According to sources, Joe Weider’s net worth is estimated to be $35 million. Needless to say that the majority of Weider’s wealth and net worth came from bodybuilding, as well as his other business ventures.

Joe Weider was born in 1920, in Quebec, Canada. Weider’s interest in bodybuilding began at the age of 17, when he published his very first magazine related to fitness called “Your Physique”. Weider then went on to design training courses for bodybuilding and even came up with “Weider System of Bodybuilding”. Weider created “Mr. Olympia” in 1965, when the very first show of an annual men’s bodybuilding contest took place in Brooklyn Academy of Music venue. Since its first show, “Mr. Olympia” has witnessed forty eight winners of the competition. The popularity of “Mr. Olympia” resulted in the creation of “Ms. Olympia”, an annual women’s bodybuilding competition, which was first held in 1980. However, Weirder did not stop at those two contests. In 1994, he came up with “The Masters Olympia”, an international bodybuilding competition, which gave a chance for former winners to continue competing past the age of 40. After the successful run, the show was discontinued in 2003 but was again picked up in 2012, when Dexter Jackson won the title.

Joe Weider’s passion for bodybuilding did not stop at creating new competitions. Following the publication of “Your Physique”, Weider came out with several others, equally or even more successful, bodybuilding magazines. “Men’s Fitness” was first published in 1988, and since then has become one of the most successful magazines in its category. “Muscle & Fitness”, “Shape” and “Flex” are some of other, more known magazines published by Weider’s company “Weider Publications”.

In addition to magazines, Weider had written several books, including a biographical work entitled “Brothers of Iron”, which he co-wrote with his brother, and “The Weider System of Bodybuilding”. Weider’s numerous publications earned him the title of “Publisher of the Year” in 1983.

Weider’s contributions to bodybuilding did not stop with competitions and publication of magazines and books. In 1936, Weider’s family founded “Weider Nutrition”, a company that produced various nutritional products. The company later changed its name to “Schiff Nutrition International”, which is now a manufacturer of nutritional supplements around the world. Joe Weider’s contributions to bodybuilding are truly remarkable.

Needless to say that even after his death from heart failure in 2013, Joe Weider will not be forgotten.
