Joe Dallesandro Wiki Biography
Joseph Angelo D’Allesandro III (born December 31, 1948), better known as Joe Dallesandro, is an American actor and Warhol superstar. Although he never became a mainstream film star, Dallesandro is generally considered to be the most famous male sex symbol of American underground films of the 20th century, as well as a sex symbol of gay subculture.Dallesandro starred in Flesh as a teenage street hustler. Rolling Stone magazine in 1970 declared his second starring vehicle, Trash, the “Best Film of the Year”, making him a star of the youth culture, sexual revolution and subcultural New York art collective of the 1970s. Joe Dallesandro Quotes
My introduction to the gay world did two things. One, it saved me from life in prison for murder, which is probably where I would have wound up. How? Because the gay world showed me that you didn’t have to beat up every man you saw or hurt people to make a point. It gave me a whole other attitude, a calmer attitude. Two, it taught me never to be homophobic, even before there was such a term. I think because I grew up in a period, especially later on, when the people I looked up to were like…my heroes….That’s what I liked about the period, that a man could say he liked both, that he appreciated both the look of a man and the look of a woman without being stereotyped.
Joe Dallesandro Important Facts
Lou Reed saw the movie Flesh (1968) and that’s where he got the idea for the third verse of the song “Walk on the Wild Side”, which is about “Little Joe”. Paul Morrissey told Lou to watch the movie and write about the characters in the film. The song is the end result.
Has a son, Mike, with whom he posed for a portrait by Greg Gorman in 1996.
His image from Andy Warhol’s Flesh (1968) appears on cover of The Smiths’ debut album “The Smiths”. He also appears on The Rolling Stones’ “Sticky Fingers” album (his crotch does, anyway). Andy Warhol picked through a drawer of Polaroids and photos and picked out the image for the cover.
