Joanna Newsom Wiki Biography
Joanna Caroline Newsom was born on 18 January 1982, in Nevada City, California USA, and is a singer, songwriter, actress and multi-instrumentalist, known from releasing several EPs and albums. These include “The Milk-Eyed Mender”, and “Ys” during her activity in the industry since 2002, and all of her efforts have helped put her net worth to where it is today.
How rich is Joanna Newsom? As of early-2018, sources estimate a net worth that is at $5 million, mostly earned through success in the music industry. She’s received a lot of critical acclaim for her work, and has been involved in various high charting projects. As she continues her career, it is expected that her wealth will also continue to increase.
Newsom grew up in a very idealistic family, and she was really restricted in being allowed to watch television or listen to the radio. However, she was exposed to a lot of music as her parents played various instruments. She attended Waldorf School, and during her time there she studied theatre. Growing up, she also learned to play the piano before transitioning to playing the harp, initially smaller Celtic harp before moving on to the full-size pedal harp. After matriculating, she attended Mills College where she studied composition and creative writing. During college, she played the keyboard as a part of the indie band The Pleased, and she soon dropped studies to focus on a career in music.
Joanna first gained attention joining Nervous Cop’s self-titled collaboration album. She then worked on two EPs entitled “Walnut Whales” and “Yarn and Glue”, homemade recordings which would catch the attention of record producers. This eventually led to her being signed to the label Drag City, which started to increase her net worth. Soon, she would make her debut album entitled “The Milk-Eye Mender” which was released in 2004, then toured to promote the album and performed with other musicians including Weird War; she also appeared as a guest on the self-titled album of Vetlver. She also made music for Vashti Bunyan’s “Lookaftering” and for the horror film “The Strangers”, so slowly gained a strong following, and continued to make music as a guest on other albums. Joanna then released her second album entitled “Ys” in 2006, and supported the album by performing in various events. The album got a lot of exposure and she also appeared in the music video “Kids”.
In 2010, Newsom started working on her third album entitled “Have One on Me” which was released in February. She then appeared as a guest composer on The Roots album “How I Got Over”. The following year, she released singles and worked on a few music videos, and also contributed vocals for “The Muppets”, and made several other television appearances. Her next project would be as a part of the track “Kindness be Conceived” by Thao and the Get Down Stay Down. She then narrated the film “Inherent Vice” before releasing another solo album, “Divers” which peaked at the top spot of the Billboard Alternative Albums Chart, all the while adding steadily to her net worth.
For her personal life, it is known that Joanna married actor Andy Samberg in 2013, prior to which she had a brief relationship with Bill Callahan. Joanna and Andy reside in Los Angeles in a house previously owned by the parents of actress Mary Astor. The couple also have a child together.

Joanna Newsom Quotes
- Well, yeah, I wanted to resist the urge to thicken everything up with instrumentation, because I just felt like I was interested in seeing how the songs did on their own.
- The very first Walnut Whales recording was recorded just a few weeks after I had started singing, out of the blue, started singing. And the voice, you can hear how uncomfortable I am with it, and how terrified I am with it.
- People in San Francisco and the East Bay have shown interest, done interviews, and have come to shows. I guess that the news travels fast out of this island that we are on.
- Lyrics are very different. There is a clear line between that and a poem. Something that has been a source of great excitement and delight for me is this idea that I get to rhyme.
- It’s valid that the Strokes and the Pleased have been influenced by some of the same bands. But it’s invalid in the sense that we listen to the Strokes and try to sounds like them. I think that they are a good band.
- It’s totally different. I usually don’t tell people about the Pleased if they know me from the harp. And if they are there to see the Pleased, I usually don’t tell them about the harp. I am nervous that these people will expect something similar.
- In high school, we studied a lot of poetical forms. I was really interested in the math that was involved and the strange live break ups. That gave me a great amount of respect for a rhymed stanza.
- I wanted to write songs which I think is a different thing. I wanted to write music that is informed by folk music. The chord progressions are obvious references.
- I recorded harp first or singing first. I recorded it all together. Part of the reason is that I don’t know how to play the songs without also singing. I forget how they progress. I don’t think that any of them are verse, chorus, verse, and so on. They are not simple.
- I definitely don’t subscribe to the theory that more instruments, or more vocal tracks, harmony, or double tracking the voice, is a good thing. People do their early albums very stripped down, then each album becomes bloated.
- I am consciously not trying to bring in World Music elements. The ways that I work and feel are completely different in how they sound than someone playing the Kora in Africa would play it.
- You should listen to a lot of different music.
- The way that words fit together is always interesting to me. I love words.
- People are often afraid for me. They think that I am going to break. I can make it through a set.
- I wasn’t interested in writing music that wasn’t beautiful for me to listen to.
- I want to make music that somehow connects to the things that I love in America music.
- I started playing harp about fourteen years ago.
- I played piano for about two years when I was a kid. I didn’t play long enough to be really great.
- I have writing songs on my own for about six years.
- I have a recording that I did of instrumental songs.
