Jerry is the son of a District Attorney of San Francisco and Governor of California Edmund Gerald Brown Sr. and his wife Bernice Layne Brown; he has three sisters. Jerry attended St. Ignatius High School, from which he matriculated in 1955, and then enrolled at Santa Clara University, where he stayed for only a year, before switching to the Sacred Heart Novitiate, a Jesuit novice house, as he wanted to become a Catholic priest. However, he left after three years, and enrolled at the University of California, Berkeley, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Classics a year later. He then entered Yale Law School, and received a Juris Doctor degree in 1964, and subsequently got his first job as a law clerk for California Supreme Court Justice Mathew Tobriner.
Jerry then returned to California, and passed the state bar exam on the second attempt, and joined the law firm Tuttle & Taylor.Brown’s political career began in 1970 when he became the California Secretary of State, and four years later he ran for the position of California governor, winning against Houston I. Flournoy, with just 50.11% of the votes. He held the position from 1975 until 1983, and at the time of his incumbency he became youngest California governor in 111 years, being 36. Before his second mandate expired, Jerry decided to run for a senate place, but was defeated by Republican Pete Wilson, mayor of San Diego. Following the defeat, Jerry left the USA, and studied Buddhism in Japan; he returned in 1988, and the next year became the chairman of the California Democratic Party, a position he held until 1991, when he decided to leave.
