Gloria Steinem Wiki Biography

Gloria Marie Steinem was born on 25 March 1934, in Toledo, Ohio USA, of Scottish and German descent. Gloria is a journalist, political activist, and social activist, perhaps still best known for becoming the leader of the feminist movement from the late 1960s to the early 1970s. She’s also the founder of Ms. Magazine, but all of her efforts have helped put her net worth to where it is today.

How rich is Gloria Steinem? As of late-2016, sources estimate a net worth that is at $3 million, mostly earned through success in journalism. She was a columnist for New York magazine and also co-founded Women’s Media Center alongside Jane Fonda. She also gave international lectures, and all of these achievements have ensured the position of her wealth.

Growing up, Gloria’s mother would grow mentally ill and as a result could not hold on to a job. This led to her parents’ eventual separation and the condition of her mother would help form her later ideas with regards to women rights as well as equality. She attended Waite High School and later Western High School in Washington D.C, and after matriculating attended Smith College where she would complete her studies. During the late 1950s, she spent two years in India and later returned to the US as a director of the Independent Research Service. In 1960, she was hired by Warren Publishing to become part of “Help!” magazine.

One of her first articles regarding issues on women was about women choosing between a career and marriage. In 1963, she worked as a Playboy Bunny at the New York Playboy Club, and would later write an article on how women were treated there. She was not able to find consistent work for a while after that, but eventually landed a job in New York magazine in 1968, but along the way she had a few notable works including an interview with John Lennon for Cosmopolitan magazine. In 1969, she began identifying as a feminist after becoming part of an abortion speak-out for New York magazine. Three years later she co-founded the magazine Ms. which started off as a special edition of New York magazine before becoming its own publication. The magazine proved very successful and helped elevate Gloria’s net worth. She continued writing throughout the 1970s, eventually becoming the first woman to speak at the National Press Club.

Aside from her writing work, Steinem became a leader in the feminist circle, and the opportunities she gained afterwards would also help her net worth. She published numerous articles and also founded the National Women’s Political Caucus or NWPC. She helped Wonder Woman retain her original costume and also co-produced the documentary called “Multiple Personalities: The Search for Deadly Memories”. In 2013, she performed on stage as part of the “Chime for Change: The Sound of Change Live”. She also became a part of the 2015 Women’s Walk for Peace in Korea which had thirty international women participating in it.

For her personal life, it is known that Steinem married the father of actor Christian Bale, David Bale in 2000 however David would pass away three years later.

She also had a previous relationship with publisher Mortimer Zuckerman which lasted for four years. She was previously diagnosed with breast cancer, and trigeminal neuralgia a few years later. Aside from these, Gloria has supported the political campaigns of numerous candidates throughout her career, from George McGovern in 1968, to Bernie Sanders in 2016..

Gloria Steinem Quotes

  • [on Donald Trump] I’ve noticed that when people are asked why they support him, they say it’s because he’s a successful businessman and therefore could run the country. Actually, he is not a successful businessman, he is a successful con man.
  • If you poured water on a great poem, you’d get a novel.
  • I’m completely happy not having children. I mean, everybody does not have to live in the same way. And as somebody said, ‘Everybody with a womb doesn’t have to have a child any more than everybody with vocal chords has to be an opera singer.
  • Listen, honey, if men could get pregnant, abortion would be a sacrament.
  • [on children] It’s clear that most children suffer too much mother and too little father.
  • We have to be careful not to have terminal gratitude, as I think of it. We need to be always looking forward. Nothing in inexorable. Nothing. It depends on what you do and I do every day, all of us here, every day. It depends on the language we use with each other. It depends on whether we tell each other our salaries, to find out who’s not getting paid. All these movements are inextricably connected.
  • [To the question of where [feminist activism] will go from here] If you look at any social movement – if you think of the suffragists, abolitionists and other movements – they had to last about a hundred years to be really absorbed into a culture. So I don’t know how to break it to you, but we have, like, 60 years to go.
  • Politics is just unequal power. Who does the dishes is political. In the politics of commerciality, if you want to put it that way, the way women’s bodies are looked at, we’re supposed to be ornaments not instruments.
  • [From an interview, 2011] This generation of young women is actually more feminist than we ever were. If you look at the public opinion polls, they’re actually much more supportive of all the issues of equality. And my question to the young woman who is dressing as you describe [‘ a hooker’] is: Is she doing it because she wants to? Is she body-proud? Because then I can say, great. Is she doing it because she feels she has to? That she won’t be popular otherwise? Then, it’s wrong.
  • On change: The moment we find the reason behind an emotion….the wall we have built is breached, and the positive memories it has kept from us return, too. That’s why it pays to ask those painful questions. The answers can set you free.
  • On childhood: When pain has been intertwined with love and closeness, it’s very difficult to believe that love and closeness can be experienced without pain.
  • On sexual politics: The Golden Rule works for men as written, but for women it should go the other way around. We need to do unto ourselves as we do unto others.
  • On self-respect: Self-esteem isn’t everything; it’s just that there’s nothing without it.
  • Men should think twice before making widowhood woman’s only path to power.
  • A woman reading Playboy is like a Jew reading Hitler’s Mein Kampf.
  • “Without leaps of imagination, or dreaming, we lose the excitement of possibilities. Dreamin, after all, is a form of planning.
  • We badly need to raise our boys more like our girls.
  • A woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle
  • The truth will set you free…but first it will piss you off.
