George Herbert Walker Bush Wiki Biography
Born on 12 June 1924, in Milton, Massachusetts, the 41st President of the United States who served in the office from 1989 until ‘93, is George Herbert Walker Bush, who prior to his Presidency was the Vice-President to President Ronald Reagan from 1981 ‘til 1989. He also served as the US Ambassador to the United Nations, Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, Chairman of the Republican National Committee, and a member of the US House of Representatives for Texas.
So just how rich is George H.W. Bush, as of early 2017? Authoritative sources estimate that Bush’s net worth is now over $25 million, accumulated from political positions, military service, business, authorship and speaking engagements, during his long career which began in 1942.
George H.W. was educated at Phillips Academy, Massachusetts, but enlisted into the US Navy on his 18th birthday, becoming the youngest Navy pilot in World War 2, and flying over 50 combat missions in torpedo bombers, being awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross among other medals.
After the war, Bush graduated from Yale University in 1948 with an economics degree, then moved to Texas, becoming involved in the oil industry, and opening his own business in 1953 when he co-created the Zapata Petroleum Corporation. The company successfully searched for oil in the Permian Basin, subsequently producing oil and gas, such that Bush became a millionaire by the time he was 40. He went on to serve as the president and then chairman of a Zapata subsidiary company entitled “Zapata Offshore Company”.
In the early ‘60s, Bush began to take a serious interest in politics, and consequently joined the Republican Party, soon being elected local chairman, and was then elected to the House of Representatives in 1966, serving two terms before losing in a bid for the Senate. However, President Richard Nixon appointed him US Ambassador to the United Nations in 1971, which he held for two years before becoming chairman of the Republican party, but then President Gerald Ford named him unofficial ambassador to China in 1974, and Director of the CIA in 1976 for two years.
From 1977 to 1981, Bush mixed academia at Rice University with business in the First International Bank in Houston, and being Director of the Council on Foreign Relations, before losing the presidential primaries to Ronald Reagan, but then becoming his Vice-President, from 1981 to ’89 and serving with distinction, which eventually saw him succeed as the 41st President of the United States.
Despite a strong performance in foreign affairs, economic problems saw Bush defeated by Bill Clinton in 1993, since when he has written about his career, and been in demand as a public speaker. He has also taken a keen interest in The George Bush Presidential Library and Museum established at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas.
In his less-than-private personal life, Bush married Barbara Pierce in 1945, and they have six children, several of whom merit their own article, including George W., the 43rd President!

George Herbert Walker Bush Quotes
- I do not like broccoli. And I haven’t liked it since I was a little kid and my mother made me eat it. And I’m President of the United States and I’m not going to eat any more broccoli.
- [assessing his presidency, 2014] The common wisdom when Nixon was around and right after was that I wasn’t tough enough, you know, wasn’t strong enough, maybe you want to say mean enough. I don’t know how widespread that was, but publicly it may have been that, may still be for all I know. It’s hard to tell now, but I think there’s a certain revisionism. It seems to blend into ‘Thank you for your public service’, not ‘Hey, why’d you do this or that on taxes, or right-wing or non-right wing’. I’m surprised people remember because I feel like I’ve gone away, out of the game, all that kind of stuff. I haven’t been particularly interested in the legacy thing, except hoping that historians get it right, which I think they will.
- If you do something, you want to do it well.
- When you change horses in midstream, doesn’t it make sense to switch to one going the other way?
- [regarding criticisms of his son George on setbacks in Iraq] This son is not going to back away. He’s not going to change his view because some poll says this or some poll says that. You can’t be president of the United States and conduct yourself if you’re going to cut and run. This is going to work out in Iraq. I understand the anxiety. It’s not easy.
- Even though I’m a tranquil guy now at this stage of my life, I have nothing but contempt and anger for those who betray the trust by exposing the name of our sources. They are, in my view, the most insidious of traitors.
- “You die, I fly!” – making reference to his frequent attendance of funerals for foreign dignitaries while serving as Vice President of the United States.
- Americans should be more like the Waltons and less like the Simpsons
- Read my lips: NO NEW TAXES!
George Herbert Walker Bush Important Facts
- A 1992 New York Times article famously portrayed Bush as being amazed by a common supermarket scanner, which helped to paint him as an elitist who was out of touch with everyday American life. In reality, the scanner that Bush was so impressed with was an advanced prototype that could weigh groceries and decipher mangled and torn bar codes. It was later discovered that the writer of the infamous article wasn’t even present at the convention where Bush was shown the scanner in question.
- It is believed that his association with far-right conservative Pat Buchanan and his infamous ‘Culture war’ speech delivered at the 1992 Republican National Convention was one of the key factors in losing him reelection as it caused moderates to vote instead for Democratic candidate Bill Clinton.
- In perhaps the most famous moment of his post-presidency career, he resigned his life membership to the National Rifle Association (NRA) in 1995 because they refused to condemn the Oklahoma City Bombing and seemed to support some of bomber Timothy McVeigh’s radical views.
- Inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2011.
- The makers of The Simpsons (1989) responded to his comments by animating the family watching his comments and then having Bart say “Hey, we’re just like the Waltons, we’re praying for an end to the Depression too”.

Coincidentally, his son, then-President George W. Bush, and former President Bill Clinton were also born the same year, with Bush 44 days older than Clinton. This neatly divides the four former Presidents into two groups: a Democrat and a Republican born in 1924, and a Democrat and a Republican born in 1946.

In the electoral college, Bush won 40 states worth 426 electoral votes to Dukakis’ 10 states and the District of Columbia worth a total of 111 electoral votes (Dukakis’ running mate, Lloyd Bentsen, received one electoral vote for President).
- Like his wife, Barbara Bush, he has had a building in Houston renamed in his honor. Houston Intercontinental Airport was renamed Bush Intercontinental Airport in 1997, while his son was Governor of Texas. The Cypress Creek Library was remodeled and renamed the Barbara Bush library in 2003.
