Elmore Ruel Torn Jr. Wiki Biography

Elmore Rual Torn Jr., born on 6 February 1931, is an American actor and director who became famous for his projects like “The Larry Sanders Show” and “Men in Black”.

So how much is Torn’s net worth? as of late 2016 based on authoritative sources, it is reported to be $10 million, acquired from his years as an actor and director in both film, television and stage production, which now spans more than 60 years.

Born in Temple, Texas, Torn is the son of Elmore Rual Torn Sr., who worked as an agriculturalist and economist, and Thelma Mary Spacek, a homemaker. Growing up on a farm, he decided to study animal husbandry at the Texas A&M University and later on graduating from the University of Texas.

With his dreams of having his own ranch, Torn decided to act a little in Hollywood to become a movie star and save up to by his own property. Unfortunately, life hit him hard and Hollywood too, and he certainly wasn’t able to become a star overnight. He worked his way through Hollywood until he was able to book his first movie “Baby Doll” in 1956.

Torn decided to take acting seriously, and studied acting under Less Strasberg and also dancing under Martha Graham. These career moves helped advance his career, and more projects came streaming in. Some of his notable performances during the late ‘50s included the play “Sweet Bird of Youth”, and folms “Pork Chop Hill”, “King of Kings” and “Channing”. His net worth was starting to move.

During the early ‘60’s to the ‘70’s, Torn also became active in acting on Broadway. Some of his early projects included “The Cincinnati Kid”, “Daughter of Silence”, “Strange Interlude”, “Blue for Mister Charlie”, “Dance of Death”, “The Glass Mengerie” and “Mixed Couples” to name a few. His time on the stage may not have lasted as long as his career on screen, but it certainly helped his career and net worth.

Aside from being active on stage in the ‘70’s, Torn maintained an active career in film and on television. In 1972, he became part of the classic film “Payday”, and worked with singer David Bowie in the film “The Man Who Fell to Earth”. In the ‘80s, Torn kept a busy career and starred in various films like “The Seduction of Joe Tynan”, “One Trick Pony”, “The Beastmaster” and “Cross Creek”, for which he earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

During the ‘90’s, although already established, Torn’s career continued to flourish and this was the time where some of his most memorable characters and performances happened, which included playing the boss of Will Smith and Tommy Lee esJon in “Men in Black”, and joining the sci-fi movie “RoboCop 3” and the comedy film “Down Periscope”.In 1992, Torn became part of “The Larry Sanders Show”, in which his performance as Artie earned him multiple Emmy award nominations and an actual award in 1996. His various projects throughout the years ultimately helped build his career and his wealth.

Today, Torn is still active as an actor. Some of his current projects include an occasional appearance in the comedy series “30 Rock”, “Men in Black 3” and “Johnny Kidd”.

In terms of his personal life, Torn was first married to Ann Wedgeworth(1956-61) with whom he has a daughter, and was then married to Geraldine Page from 1963 until she passed away in 1987; they had a daughter and twin sons. Elmore Ruel Torn Jr. Quotes

  • There’s always some kind of blacklist throughout history. But the difference is, in America they usually let you live.
  • Everybody says, ‘You impress me as a guy who never wanted to be a movie star.’ I say, ‘Everybody in the world wants to be a movie star.’
  • Anything new is always considered the devil’s tool.
  • I’ve never hit anybody who hasn’t clocked me two or three times.
  • I think most actors are shy. I really do. The greatest actors can disappear. I had friends call me the Blend-In Man.
  • Let the other guys do the crybaby stuff. Go for the laughs.
  • I’ve got two old Volvos, two old Subarus, and an old Ford Ranger. If you’ve got an old car, you’ve gotta have at least several old cars, ’cause one’s always gonna be in the garage.
  • When I grew up, people said, ‘You’ll never be the man your dad was.’ And I said, ‘Gee, I hope not.’
  • Be your own politics, grow your own garden, and maybe you can help out more.
  • Don’t ever humiliate a man. If you’re gonna have to dress him out, you take him aside and do it that way. That’s the one thing I don’t like about Hollywood: They go in for public humiliation. You shouldn’t do that to a man.
  • You can never turn your back on the ocean.
  • If I could just get a piece of lemon, it’d be great.
  • If you’re lucky enough to have a pretty girl love you and share herself and sleep with you, make that your secret. The best way to spoil love is by talking to too many people about it.
  • I used to be friends with Miles Davis. He didn’t like many folks. I lived across the street from him.
  • I honor religion except when it gets into shedding blood.
  • Never think you’re better than anyone else, but don’t let anyone treat you like you’re worse than they are.
  • [on receiving his first Oscar nomination] People are finally realizing I’m one of the few actors who has never missed a performance. I’ve worked with broken legs, arms, ankles. I once passed a kidney stone during the opening night of a show.
  • What do they say about all the guys that are tremendous actors? Don’t they say they have a volatile temper and emotions? Yeah, sure they do! They’re not saying they like a nice mild guy. Look at Sean Penn. [on being called volatile].
