Eddi-Rue McClanahan Wiki Biography

  • Born on 21 February 1934, Eddie-Rue McClanahan was an American television and stage actress, famously known for her appearance in the Golden Girls television comedy series.
  • It was claimed by sources to be an estimated $5 million as of early 2016, earned mainly from her long career as an actress.
  • McClanahan’s parents, Dreda Rheua-Nell and William Edwin McClanahan were born in Healdton, Oklahoma.
  • After enrolling at Ardmore High School, a dancer since she was a teen, she was offered a dance scholarship but decided to concentrate on acting and attended the University of Tulsa where she majored in German and Theater.
  • McClanahan began to make a name for herself during her university years by performing in small productions.
  • Her debut role was in the play “Inherit the Wind” at Pennsylvania’s Erie Playhouse.
  • She later moved to New York to pursue an acting career on Broadway, wherein the musical “Jimmy Shine” she debuted as Sally Weber.
  • Her small Broadway acting roles added to her net worth, but when Norman Lear, a TV executive, discovered her talent, he offered her a guest spot on the “All in the Family” TV show.
  • Again, Lear helped her secure a spot in another TV show, “Maude,” in which her role as Vivian Harmon developed into a regular series from a guest appearance.
  • McClanahan began to gain recognition for her television appearances, and when she was included in the “The Golden Girls” television series, her comedic timing and acting talent received the most praise.
  • McClanahan made appearances on numerous other television shows, including “Trapper John,” “MD,” and “Mama’s Family,” all of which helped her career and net worth, but after a long period of acting on stage and television, when NBC executives tapped her to join the cast of “Golden Girls,” alongside actresses Bea Arthur, Betty White, and Estelle Getty, her career was catapulted to massive success.
  • In the hit show that lasted for seven seasons before it ended in 1992, she played the part of Blanche Devereaux, the self-absorbed, man-hungry girl from the South.
  • In the show “The Golden Palace,” McClanahan reprised her role, but that only lasted for one season.
  • Rue was never out of work during a career spanning over 60 years, as shown by her participation in over 30 films and more than 50 TV productions.
  • She published her autobiographical novel ‘My First Five Husbands… and the Ones That Got Away’ in 2007.
  • Rue McClanahan was married six times in terms of her personal life and had one son from her first marriage, Mark Bish.
  • She has been an active supporter of the animal rights movement, including Alley Cat Allies and Citizens for the Humane Treatment of Animals.
  • McClanahan died from a brain hemorrhage in New York in 2010 at the age of 76 after overcoming breast cancer in 1997 and surviving triple bypass surgery in 2009.

Eddi-Rue McClanahan Quotes

  • [on her religion when asked about it] Yes, I am a Methodist. I have been affiliated with the Methodist church since I was a child and I must say that I simply love it! There are three things in this world that I love; animals, my Golden Girls and being a Methodist. I can’t fathom being a member in any other religion than the Methodist church. It is so relaxed and welcoming and you can just be yourself while worshiping with no strings attached. I am very proud to be a member in the Methodist church!
  • People always ask me if I’m like Blanche. And I say, “Well, Blanche was an oversexed, self-involved, man-crazy, vain Southern belle from Atlanta — and I’m not from Atlanta!”
  • Compassion is the foundation of everything positive, everything good. If you carry the power of compassion to the marketplace and the dinner table, you can make your life really count.

It was thought best not to typecast these two actresses by having them portray similar characters. Therefore, Betty got the part of naive Rose Nylund and Rue played the oversexed Blanche.
