Duane Chapman Wiki Biography

Born Duane Lee Chapman I. on the 2nd February 1953 in Denver, Colorado USA, he is a professional bounty hunter and bail bondsman, best known to the world for appearing in the reality TV series “Dog the Bounty Hunter” (2003-2012), in which he is filmed catching real-life fugitives in the state of the Hawaiian Islands.

Have you ever wondered how rich Duane Chapman is, as of late 2017? According to authoritative sources, it has been estimated that Chapman’s wealth is as high as $6 million, an amount earned through his successful bounty-hunting and related reality TV career, active since the ‘80s.

Duane is the first child born to Barbara and Wesley Chapman, of part-German and English ancestry; he has two younger sisters and a brother. His mother Barbara was a rather devoted woman and a pastor in Assembly of God. She raised him with Christian rules and morals.

However, Duane strained his adult life when he was arrested in 1976 on a count of first-degree murder, after he and his friend apparently accidentally killed Jerry Oliver an alleged pimp and drug dealer. He was sentenced five years in prison, but spent only 18 months at Texas State Penitentiary in Huntsville, Texas. During his prison time, Duane was involved in an accident in which he saved the life of an inmate who was about to be shot during an escape attempt. He received praise from the warden and Corrections Officer, which helped reduce his incarceration and inspired him to become a bounty hunter after his release.

However, due to his conviction, he can’t own a fire weapon, and can’t enter the United Kingdom.

Duane slowly started developing his business in the Hawaiian Islands, but also throughout North America, catching wanted criminals, then in 2003 first gained attention when he caught Andrew Luster, who was facing multiple charges of assault and rape from 1996 until 2000, after he fled the US during the trial. Duane had numerous problems to extradite Luster, as he caught him in Mexico, and on the way to California they were held up by Mexican police since bounty hunting was illegal in Mexico. Luckily, Luster was eventually sent to California, but Duane and his hunting team remained captives in a Mexican prison. Doug was released with a bail of $300,000, and after leaving prison left Mexico, but the trial still awaited him. After several years of problems with the Mexican government, Duane and his team were finally freed from all charges.

Thanks to his success Duane became a subject of A&E’s new reality series “Dog the Bounty Hunter” (2003-2012), which certainly increased his wealth and popularity as well. While the show lasted, Duane and his team that consisted of his son Leland, and wife Beth, and Tim Chapman (not related), have caught a number of fugitives.

Unfortunately, the show was canceled after an internal fight between Duane and his son in 2012. However, the new show was recreated, aired on CMT, and entitled “Dog and Beth: On the Hunt”. His son rejoined him, and alongside his wife, the trio has been visiting failing bail bonds agencies across the country, advising them how to turn around the business. This has also contributed to Duane’s wealth.

Regarding his personal life, Duane has been married five times and divorced for times. Since 2006 he has been married to Beth Chapman, with whom he has two children.

His first wife was LaFonda Sue Honeycutt from 1972 until 1977 with whom he hastwo children; while he was imprisoned, LaFonda divorced him and married his best friend. In 1979 he married Anne M.Tegnell with whom he had three children, before they divorced in 1982. The same year he married his third wife, Lyssa Rae Worthington and the couple was married until 1991; Lyssa gave him three more children. Following his divorce with Lyssa, he married Tawny Marie Gillespie; the couple didn’t have children, and divorced in 2003.

Duane Chapman Quotes

  • I’m very emotional. That’s why I wear shades a lot.
  • In Hawaii, we have something called Ho’oponopono, where people come together to resolve crises and restore peace and balance.
  • Everybody’s under God’s planet, and God is the Almighty, the Beginning, the End, the Alpha, the Omega. He’s Big Daddy. He gives out these little soldiers and sons and angels and saints to help everybody else get through to him. I’m not the ‘Jesus-only or you’re going to Hell’ kind of guy.
  • Faith is the substance of hope – of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen. So if you can hope for it and imagine it, and keep imagining and hoping and seeing yourself driving a new car, or seeing yourself getting that job, or seeing yourself excel, seeing yourself help that person – that is faith.
  • You can’t be afraid to put out a fire if you’re a fireman. You can’t be afraid to be a police officer and carry a gun if you’re afraid to get up and go out there. So you’ve got to put that fear to the side and go out in faith to overcome that.
  • I have a hard problem, being some part Native American – being a Christian: do you get burned, do you get cremated, do you get – let the sharks eat you? How do you die?
  • Born on a mountain, raised in a cave. Arresting fugitives is all I crave.
  • And I used to say, ‘I’m black, too.’ In other words, I – my whole life I’ve been called a half-breed, a convict, king of the trailer trash, this and that. I take that and stand.
  • As a bounty hunter, I have to dress the part. If I came to the door and looked like Carrot Top, you’d laugh.
  • It’s just like being a father; you got to show them love and you got to show them the path. I don’t like this role-model stuff, though.
  • I’ve been a biker, I’ve been a convict, I’ve been a husband, father, and son.
  • I would have done higher than that… I would have set it higher.
  • When I was a child I liked watching shows about bounty hunters and Canadian Mounties. I liked the ‘Lone Ranger,’ I liked shows where the guy saved the girl from the villain. I just liked those kinds of things and I wanted to be a guy like that, you know, that would save the damsel in distress.
  • Dog is God spelled backward.
  • I have the utmost respect and ‘aloha’ for black people – who have already suffered so much due to racial discrimination and acts of hatred.
  • I was in prison for a charge in Texas, murder one. Back in the ’70s in Texas, I was there. I heard the shot. I was in the car.
  • I’m going to be Dog, and I’m going to be an entertainer. And I’m going to make mistakes.
  • I’m marrying my common-law wife, Beth, the Christian way, with a preacher and all that.
  • I’m Native American, so it’s in my blood to always want brothers and friends. I’m a good brotherhood guy.
  • I’ve always taken pride to be the white guy that can talk to the black people, that can refer to them truly as a brother from a different mother.
  • If I was Judge Del Rosario, I would say Ili, of all people, you know better.
  • Six men can carry you or 12 men can judge you. You decide!
  • The closest thing to hell on earth is prison. It’s the worst experience I’ve ever had in my life. Besides death.
  • I love what I do. I love to capture the guy. I love to tell the victim ‘Don’t worry anymore. They’re in jail.’ And this is my way to heaven. This is my way to contribute to America what I know how to do best, and that’s chase down the predator.
  • My father is the reason I am the way I am today. He’s why I acted up and he’s why I prayed to be the opposite of him. We made up before he died but I vowed to never raise my kids like how he raised me.
  • We believe that God is big enough to give every nationality their own religion, as he’s given them their own taste in food, in plants, in furniture, and housing. I think that each religion has their basic Christ-ish way to get to the Everlasting God.
  • When someone is looking down, they’re saying no. When they’re looking up, they’re looking to their brain for memory. When they look to the left, they’re looking for a lie or something they memorized. When they look to the right, they’re feeling sorry – they don’t want to answer.
