Don Johnson Wiki Biography

Donnie Wayne Johnson was born on 15 December 1949, in Flat Creek, Missouri USA, to mother Nell, a beautician, and father Wayne Johnson, a farmer. Don is a actor who rose to prominence as a star of such television series “Miami Vice” and “Nash Bridges”. In addition he is also a singer, songwriter, director and producer, which collectively has earned him a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Don Johnson has been active in the entertainment industry since 1969.

So just how rich is Don Johnson, as of late 2017? Sources report that Don’s current net worth reaches the sum of $45 million; he apparently earned $1.2 million for the first season of the television series “Nash Bridges”, although Don stated that he earned $150,000 for every episode of the mentioned above series.

Don Johnson matriculated from South High School in 1967, and afterwards he studied at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, but didn’t graduate, dropping out to concentrate on an acting career. He debuted on the big screen with a leading role in the film “The Magic Garden of Stanley Sweetheart” (1970) directed by Leonard Horn. Other important roles in the early years of Don’s career were in films including “Zachariah” (1971) directed by George Englund, “The Harrad Experiment” (1973) and “A Boy and His Dog” (1975) directed by L.Q. Jones.

Don Johnson actually rose to prominence on TV, in 1984 for his role as James “Sonny” Crockett in the crime drama series “Miami Vice” created by Anthony Yerkovich, which continued until 1989. For this role Johnson won the Golden Globe Award for the Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Drama. Another outstanding character created by Don was that of Nash Bridges in the police procedural series “Nash Bridges” (1996-2001) by Carlton Cuse. During his long spanned career Johnson has created many other impressive roles, and currently he is working on his role in the horror drama series “From Dusk till Dawn: The Series” (2014 – present) created by Quentin Tarantino and Robert Kurtzman.

Don Johnson is the winner of a Saturn Award, Golden Globe Award, and aside from acting, was a noted powerboat racer, the American Power Boat Association’s 1988 World Champion of the Offshore World Cup. In 1996, he was rewarded with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

In addition to being a popular actor, Don Johnson is also a singer; he has released two studio albums, a compilation album and six singles. Both of his studio albums “Heartbeat” (1986) and “Let It Roll” (1989) found a place on the music charts in most European countries as well as in the US music charts.

In 2010, Johnson received $23.2 million from the production company Rysher Entertainment as a legal settlement for his rights to 50% of the copyright of “Nash Bridges”, then in completing the same case, Don received a further $19 million in 2012. However, he lost millions when having legal problems while allegedly being involved in money laundering in Germany, which charges were eventually quashed. However, perhaps he’s not a great money manager, as he only avoided foreclosure on his property in Colorado in 2008, by paying $14.5 million in debts just the day prior.

In his personal life, Don Johnson has been married four times; his first two marriages were annulled and the names of the wives haven’t been announced to the public. He was briefly married to actress Melanie Griffith in 1976, then partnered with actress Patti D’Arbanville from 1981 to 1985, and Barbra Streisand to 1988 before marrying Griffiths again, from 1989 to 1996. He has been married to Kelley Phleger since 1999. He has fathered five children.

Don Johnson Quotes

  • [on his hit single “Heartbeat”] I was in Los Angeles and I had been over to see Jesse (his then 2-year-old son) and Patti (the boy’s mother). I went back to the hotel that night and the lyrics started pouring out. I can look at the song now and see this deep sense of yearning, this sense of loss in someone’s life and I can certainly identify with that.
  • [on his album “Heartbeat”] I wanted the record to be modern, tough rock and I think I achieved that on some level. I didn’t want it to sound like something that other people designed and I just stopped by for a few minutes to do the vocals. And I made it clear to Walter that I would walk away from it if I didn’t think it was credible. I was prepared every step of the way to throw it away and walk away.
  • [on his younger days on drugs and alcohol] A lot of my friends didn’t make it. And the ones that lived, some of them are irreparably damaged for life. I remember incredibly vibrant, beautiful, talented people, who today are walking wounded, they can’t put two sentences together.
  • [on how his 9 month old son inspired him to get sober] Actually I didn’t look at the baby. The baby looked at me and had a look of horror on his face. I’d been out for a weekend’s foray into the world of hanging out with my buddies and running wild and hitting one spot and another. I walked in after one of those weekends and stepped into my house where there was this wonderful little scene of madonna and child at the breakfast table. And I walk in, looking like something the cat had drug in and all twisted, mangled, and my eyes looking like two dark circles, you know, I mean messed up, man. And my little boy is mid-bite in his oatmeal, and he’s looking up at me going “What in the hell is that?” You know. “Oh, oh it’s only Daddy”, you know. And that’s when it hit me.
  • [on his sudden success with Miami Vice (1984)] You’re in this constant state of flux and transition, as if you had jet lag all the time. The acting part of it is easy. It’s all the other things that come with it that are a bit difficult.
  • This is my problem: I do too many things at the same time.
  • There’s a long, long list of well-known drunks and drug addicts in the business who work regularly.
  • The thing about the violence on television is, there’s a good deal of it that’s irresponsible.
  • It’s a great thing for an actor, who loves to do what he does, just to get a job!
  • [on Nash Bridges (1996)] I’m walking a different kind of line with this show. I want the tone of it to be something we can enjoy, something we can laugh with, and at the same time, I want it to be about the people – their heart, their feelings.
  • I was very lucky with my first album. It did very well. The second one was kind of “uhhh”. But that happens.
  • Hollywood is very much an industry town. Your life becomes caught up in all of the parties and this list and that list. That’s not something that I respond well to.
  • I was a pariah when it came to television – I’d made five pilots or six pilots and none of them had sold.
  • I would think that anybody who was going to do a Miami Vice (1984) movie would at some point have to deal with “the Don Johnson factor”.
  • [on the forgotten veterans] Now is the time to make a firm statement to show solidarity in support of our fighting men and women… past, present and future. My reverence for their courage and sense of duty is profound…
  • Even though some of the films I’ve made haven’t been particularly commercial, I don’t find them failures.
  • People in the business will stay with you through drugs and alcohol and divorces and insanity and everything else, but you have a failure, pal, and they don’t want to know nothing about you!
  • I was a little, skinny, runt kid, and I decided that bowling was what I was going to do in life.
  • I’ve had some ambivalent feelings about being an actor. I don’t know that I’ve ever been totally and completely comfortable with it.
  • Let me just say, I’ve seen a pub or two, and I sure knew the definition of the word “party”.
  • [on landing Miami Vice (1984)] For anybody, let alone someone coming from Missouri, and someone with absolutely no contacts or no understanding of the business, I was very lucky.
  • Anybody, any actor, any director, will tell you that the hardest job in show business is doing a weekly series, because you work 16, 14, 15 hours a day, five days a week.
  • I like to have really fine things. I have a great appreciation for fine art, fine homes, fine wine, fine cigars and fine friends.
  • I’m better than [Robert De Niro], I’m better than [Al Pacino]. I’ve got the talent, they’ve got the material.
  • [interviewed on the “Ron and Ron” radio talk show] I can do whatever I want – I’m rich, I’m famous, and I’m bigger than you.
  • Television actors are bigger than movie actors these days. More people see them, more people recognize them; the salaries in television are rivaling those in feature films.

Johnson wore many different models on Miami Vice (1984), most notably a pair of Ray-Ban Wayfarers (Model L2052, Mock Tortoise) which increased sales of Ray Ban’s to 720,000 units in 1984 alone.
  • During pre-production of Miami Vice (1984), he wanted Sonny Crockett to be “more of a cowboy”, and suggested “a lot of denim, V-neck sweaters and cowboy boots”. He was really unsure about how the heavy use of pastel and bright colors would fit the macho, no-nonsense persona of his character, but producer Michael Mann and costume designer Jodie Lynn Tillen managed to convince him. They saw Crockett more in the lines of a beach bum. Johnson relented and as a result became one of the biggest fashion symbols of the 1980s.
