McCall was educated at the private Godolphin and Latymer School in Hammersmith.
Despite suffered from anorexia, at the age of 15, McCall began singing professionally in a band, but decided to start a solo career at the age of 19. During this time she had a relationship with Eric Clapton, an old family friend – he produced a demo tape for her, and helped her to make an attempt to storm the pop music world. However, this failed, and disappointed she gave up singing, and started working as a dispatcher for Models One, but also appeared in “Word Is Out”, Kylie Minogue’s music video. Later, she ran a restaurant in Paris for two years, where she also worked as a singing waitress, but returned to London after a failed bid as a cabaret artist, during which time she became drug addicted.
Concerning her subsequent professional career, after getting rid of her drug habit, Eric Clapton helped her to get her own show on the MTV music channel. In 1995, she presented the game show “God’s Gift” on ITV, and later the game show “Streetmate” on Channel 4. After the moderate success of these programs, McCall became the host of the British version of “Big Brother” in 2000, and then “Celebrity Big Brother”, of which she moderated all the seasons and some special broadcasts including “Big Brother: On The Couch” until the end of the series in 2010.
