David Johansen Wiki Biography
Born David Roger Johansen on the 9th January 1950, in Staten Island, New York USA, he is a musician, singer, songwriter and actor as well, best known to the world as a member of the proto-punk band New York Dolls, with which he released five studio albums. David’s career started in the late ’60s.
Have you ever wondered how rich David Johansen is, as of mid- 2017? According to authoritative sources, it has been estimated that Johansen’s net worth is as high as $2 million, an amount earned through his successful career in the entertainment industry. Apart from a career with the New York Dolls, David has also performed on his own, under the pseudonym Buster Poindexter, releasing four albums from the late ‘80s until the late ‘90s, which also improved his wealth.
David is of mixed ancestry; his mother is Irish-American, while his father is Norwegian-American. Raised as a Catholic, David fell in love with music from an early age, and as he was growing up his ambitions to start a musical career only increased. In his teens, he performed with several bands, before joining the punk band Dolls, which soon became New York Dolls. They released two albums in the mid- ‘70s, “New York Dolls” (1973), and “Too Much Too Soon” (1974), which spawned singles such as “Personality Crisis”, “Trash”, “Stranded in the Jungle”, and “Don’t Start Me Talkin’”, among many others. Unfortunately, they were dropped by the label due to low-charting positions and as a result, the band broke up two years later.
Nevertheless, they reformed in the mid- 2000s, in the line-up that comprised David as the vocalist, Sylvain Sylvain on bass, Arthur Kane on guitars, and Gary Powell as the drummer. However, Kane died that year, but the group continued with changes in the line-up. Their third album came out in 2006, entitled “One Day It Will Please Us to Remember Even This”, and toured consistently until a fallout in 2011. Before final disbandment, New York Dolls released two more albums, “Cause I Sez So” (2009), and “Dancing Backward in High Heels” (2011).
David meantime formed a country band, called the Harry Smiths, as a tribute to late artist Harry Everett Smith, who had a great impact on music, film and visual artistry on the whole. The band released two albums “David Johansen and the Harry Smiths” in 2000, and “Shaker” in 2002.
David has also created soundtracks for several films, including “Times Square”, and “The Aviator”, and has hosted the radio show “David Johansen’s Mansion of Fun”. This also added to his wealth.
David is also a successful actor; he made his debut in the mid- ‘80s, in a minor role in the TV series “Miami Vice” (1985). Since then, he has made 40 film and TV appearances, portraying such characters as Ghost of Christmas Past in “Scrooged” (1988), as Looney in “Let It Ride” (1989), then Tommy Thanatos in the comedy “Mr. Nanny” (1993), starring Hulk Hogan, and most recently appeared in the Bill Murray’s special “A Very Murray Christmas” (2015), among many other appearances, which also increased his net worth.
Regarding his personal life, David has been married to Mara Hennessey since 2013; he is stepfather to her daughter Leah Victoria Hennessey, lead singer of the pop rock band Make Out. Previously, David was married to actress and model Cyrinda Foxe, but their marriage lasted only a year, from 1977 until 1978. In 1988 he married Kate Simon and the two divorced in 2004.
