According to authoritative sources, it has been estimated that Birney’s net worth is as high as $5 million, an amount earned through his successful acting career. In addition to playing in television shows, Birney also worked in both theater and film, which improved his wealth too.

David Birney was the first child of Jeanne and Edwin B. Birney, a special agent for the FBI, and went to high schools in Ohio and Brooklyn before he matriculated from West High School in Cleveland. He later attended Dartmouth College graduating with a BA in English literature, while at the UCLA Birney received an MA in Theatre Arts, and then decided to pursue an acting career.

Following his notable roles in the theater in such adaptations as Hamlet, Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, Richard II and Richard III among others, David finally got his first on-screen part in 1967. He appeared in an episode of the Primetime Emmy Award-nominated series “Love Is a Many Splendored Thing”, and then starred in a Primetime Emmy Award-nominated TV movie called “Saint Joan” (1967). From 1972 to 1973, he portrayed Bernie Steinberg in 24 episodes of the Golden Globe Award-nominated show “Bridget Loves Bernie”, which is one of his best parts to date. In 1976, Birney played John Quincy Adams in the Primetime Emmy Award-winning show “The Adams Chronicles”, and also had a role as Serpico in the series about the famous New York detective who hunted bad cops. He ended the ‘70s with a starring role in John Carpenter’s horror movie “Someone’s Watching Me!” (1978), and starred in the Primetime Emmy Award-winning television drama “High Midnight” (1979), all of which contributed steadily to his net worth.

David returned to TV series in the ‘80s, and played Dr. Ben Samuels in 22 episodes of the Golden Globe Award-nominated “St. Elsewhere” (1982-1983), while from 1989 to 1993, he appeared in four episodes of the Golden Globe Award-winning “Murder, She Wrote”. Birney’s latest notable appearance was in the Golden Globe Award-winning series “Without a Trace” in 2007.

Regarding his personal life, David Birney was married to Joan Concannon, and then he married fellow actress Meredith Baxter in 1974, with whom he played in “Bridget Loves Bernie”. David has three children with her, but they divorced in 1989, since when he has remained unmarried.
