Have you ever wondered how rich Dave Bing is, as of early 2017? According to authoritative sources, it has been estimated that Bing’s net worth is as high as $5 million, an amount earned through his careers in basketball, in business as he owned the Bing Steel, and from his political position.
Dave Bing was born the second of four children of Hasker Bing, a bricklayer and deacon for the Baptist Church, and Juanita, a housekeeper. Dave suffered a house accident when he poked his left eye with a rusty nail and his eyesight was damaged as a result. That didn’t limit him to excel at baseball, but especially in basketball at Spingarn High School, where he was a top player and emerged as one of the best in the country.
From 1963 to 1966, Bing attended Syracuse University and was excellent at basketball, finishing as the fifth in scoring in the US and was named the Syracuse Athlete of the Year as a senior. The Detroit Pistons selected Bing as the second overall pick in the 1966 NBA Draft, and he won the NBA Rookie of the Year Award after averaging 20 points per game. The next season he finished as the NBA top scorer with 27.1 points per game and won his first NBA All-Star appearance. Until 1975, Bing was selected to the All-Star game on six more occasions. Dave then spent two seasons with the Washington Wizards from 1975 to 1977, where he participated in another All-Star game in 1976. He ended his playing career in 1978 with the Boston Celtics, and was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1990.
In 1980, Dave started his own business named Bing Steel, and although he lost all of his money in the first six months, the business started booming after he signed a deal with General Motors, and within two years the company made over $4 million in profit. In the next five years, Bing Steel expanded to 63 employees and revenue of $40 million; the company was sold in 2009.
In October 2008, Bing announced that he would run for the Mayor of Detroit and was elected after beating 14 other candidates. He served as a Mayor of Detroit from 2009 to 2013 when the city became the largest one in the U.S. history to declare bankruptcy; he declined to re-contest..
