Cynthia Lillian Powell Wiki Biography

Cynthia Lennon, born on the 10th of September, 1939, was an artist and entrepreneur, but was perhaps best known as the first wife of Beatles member, John Lennon. She passed away in 2015.

So how much was Lennon’s net worth? Based on authoritative sources, it is estinated to be $3 million, acquired from her divorce from John Lennon, the proceeds of her auction of Lennon’s items and memorabilia, and various businesses.

Born in Blackpool, Lancashire, England, Lennon was the daughter of Charles Powell and Lillian Powell and the youngest of three children. The family moved constantly because of the effects of the Second World War in the country, but settled at Hoylake. Despite their constant relocation, Lennon started showing progress in creating art even a young age. When she was 11, she won an art competition hosted by the Liverpool Echo that later on led her to pursue arts in school. At age 12, she was accepted at Liverpool’s Junior Art School, where she honed her talents in the arts.

In 1957, Lennon got a slot at the Liverpool College of Art where she would meet John Lennon when the two shared a class in lettering – John always came in class without any art materials and always asked Cynthia to borrow some of her items. Their day to day conversation led the two to get close to each other. They originally dated other people, Lennon was even engaged to a different guy back in Hoylake, but in 1958 the two decided to go out together. In 1962, Lennon found out she was pregnant to John, and the two married in August 1962 at the Mount Pleasant Register office in Liverpool. The wedding was attended by Paul McCartney and George Harrison, John’s fellow Beatles, and Brian Epstein, the band’s manager. She was 22 and John 21.

Lennon and John spent the early years of their married life travelling constantly because of Beatles popularity, touring around the world. She became acquainted with the other wives of John’s fellow band members and they travelled the world together.

After seven years, unfortunately Lennon’s marriage life crumbled. She discovered that John was having an affair with an artist named Yoko Ono, exchanging letters that started Lennon’s doubt. One day, after returning home from vacationing in Greece Lennon discovered John and Ono on the floor inside their home in Kenwood. She filed for divorce in 1968, and they went their separate ways. The settlement Lennon got from the divorce made up most of her net worth.

After John’s death, Lennon also started selling most of the items they had shared together. She hosted several auctions, selling many of John’s memorabilia, from Christmas cards, to even his drug paraphernalia. The proceeds of the sale also helped in her wealth.

Lennon also wrote a book about her relationship with John in “A Twist of Lennon” in 1978, and “John” in 2005. The sales of which also helped her income.

In terms of her personal life, Lennon remarried a couple of times after her relationship with John. In 1970, she married to Roberto Bassanini but ended the relationship after three years. In 1976, she married John Twist, but filed for divorce in 1983. She had a successful relationship with Jim Christie that lasted for 17 years, but ended in 1998. From 2002 she was married to Noel Charles until her death in 2015, after a short bout with cancer at her home in Majorca, Spain.
