Colin Powell Wiki Biography

  • Colin Luther Powell was born on 5 April 1937, of Jamaican, Scottish, and African-American descent, in New York City, USA, and named after the heroic pilot of World War II fame, Colin P. Kelly Jr. Colin is a former U.S. Army general, only the third general to attain four-star ranking without serving as a division commander since World War II, and holds the distinction of being the only African-American to be part of the Joint Military Staff Chiefs.
  • He is possibly best known, though, as a statesman, being the first African-American to serve as Secretary of State of the United States.
  • All of his efforts helped to put his net worth where it is today.
  • Sources report a net value of $45 million as of mid-2016, largely accrued over a prosperous military and political career.
  • He has held various government posts and has had a distinguished military career as well.
  • Colin attended Morris High School and, in 1954, enrolled.
  • He then attended New York City College, from which he graduated with a geology degree.
  • Powell began his military career when he entered the Training Corps of Reserve Officers (ROTC).
  • Colin became part of the White House Fellowship after the war, under President Richard Nixon.
  • He held the highest military position in the Department of Defense as the Chairman.
  • Although promoting diplomacy and containment during his tenure, he oversaw several crises, including Operation Desert Storm and the Invasion of Panama.
  • Under Bill Clinton’s presidency, his work continued, criticizing military measures that were not in the country’s interest.
  • He served until 1993 in the position.
  • Colin Powell showed little interest in running for political offices, although widely popular, ultimately opting to support Republican presidential candidates.
  • President George W. Bush subsequently named him Secretary of State in 2001, primarily because of his cautious position on foreign relations.
  • Nevertheless, after 9/11, he was instrumental in joining the war against terrorism and ultimately agreed to the invasion of Iraq and the overthrow of Saddam Hussein.
  • Powell returned to private life after having finished his term in 2005.
  • Since 1962, Colin Powell has been married to Alma Johnson for his personal life and they have a son and two daughters.

Colin Powell Quotes

  • The “I Have a Dream” speech [given by civil rights leader Martin Luther King] held up a mirror for all Americans to look deeply into the spirit and soul of our country. The “Dream” speech, along with the Civil Rights Act and Voting Rights Act that followed, finally broke the bonds of segregation and Jim Crow that had imprisoned our finest dreams. Not only were African-Americans given a berth of freedom, but white America had a horrible burden removed from its back. Fifty years later, we have seen great progress. But we are not yet where we need to be. Education, jobs, health care and good housing for all Americans must remain our goal. We all must work together if Dr. King’s dream is to be fully realized.
  • There are no secrets to success. It is the result of preparation, hard work, and learning from failure.
  • We need people who know how the system runs, but it really is not necessary to stay there for an entire career. When I was made a three-star general, I was congratulated and told, “Two years from now to the day, if we haven’t given you another job or promotion we expect your resignation on our desk”. That’s not bad.
  • [2/24/01, in Cairo, Egypt] He [Saddam Hussein] has not developed any significant capability with respect to weapons of mass destruction. He is unable to project conventional power against his neighbors.
  • [regarding the notorious prison at the US Navy’s Guantanamo Bay base in Cuba set up by the George W. Bush administration to hold suspects accused of terrorist activities without trial or charges] If it was up to me, I would close Guantanamo not tomorrow but this afternoon.
  • [in response to Harry Belafonte’s “house slave” remark about him] If Harry had wanted to attack my politics, that was fine. If he wanted to attack a particular position I hold, that was fine. But to use a slave reference, I think, is unfortunate and is a throwback to another time and another place that I wish Harry had thought twice about using.
  • Avoid having your ego so close to your position that when your position falls, your ego goes with it.
  • [about the late Swedish Foreign Minister, Anna Lindh] There are three things I like about Sweden: ABBA, Volvo and Anna!
