Coko Wiki Biography
Born Cheryl Elizabeth Gamble on the 13th June 1970, in The Bronx, New York City USA, Coko is an R&B singer, best known to the world as the lead singer of the R&B group Sisters With Voices. Also, she has had a successful solo career during which she released four studio albums, and has a duet with actor/singer Will Smith “Men in Black”, which was used as the soundtrack for the film of the same name.
Have you ever wondered how rich Coko is, as of mid- 2017? According to authoritative sources, it has been estimated that Coko’s net worth is as high as $10 million, earned through her successful career in the music industry, which has been active since the mid- ‘80s.
Coko is the daughter of gospel singer Mother Lady “Clyde” Tibba Gamble. She started singing when she was three years old, and slowly became more dedicated to singing, and joining Hezekiah Walker’s Love Fellowship Crusade Choir, the start of her recording career.
In the mid- ‘80s, she and Tamara “Taj” Johnson formed a gospel duo, and with the addition of Leanne “Lelee” Lyons, made the switch into R&B music. The newly formed trio called themselves Sisters With Voices (SWW), and soon recorded a demo tape, which they sent to record producers across the USA, also to Perrier, in order to receive attention from producers.
In 1991 they performed live for RCA executives, and in no time the girls signed a recording contract with the record house. SSW’s debut album came out in 1992, entitled “It’s About Time”, achieving triple platinum status in the USA, and reaching No. 2 on the US R&B chart, which only increased Coko’s net worth and encouraged her and the two other singers to continue their musical enterprise. Their second album came out four years later, but before they hit studio, the trio went on a tour in support of their debut album, which also contributed to Coko’s net worth. The second album came out on the 23rd April 1996 entitled “New Beginning”, and peaked at No. 3 on the US R&B chart, while it achieved platinum status in the USA. Coko and SSW released two more albums before their break-up in 1998, entitled “Release Some Tension”, and “A Special Christmas”, both in 1997. However, the group reunited in 2005 and since then has released two more albums – “I Missed Us” (2012), and “Still” (2016), the sales of which have also contributed to Coko’s wealth.
During the SSW hiatus, Coko launched her solo career, and in 1999 recorded the eponymous single with Will Smith “Men in Black”, then released her debut solo album “Hot Coko”, which reached No. 14 on the US R&B chart, and spawned such hits as “Sunshine” and “Triflin“, which is a duet with Eve. Seven years later, Coko released her second album “Grateful”, which saw a considered decline in popularity as it reached only No. 40 on the US R&B chart, but she continued her solo career with two more albums “A Coko Christmas” (2008), and “The Winner in Me” (2009), before completely devoting to SSW.
Regarding her personal life, Coko has been married to gospel producer and drummer Mike Clemons since 2006; the couple has a son together. Also, Coko has a son born in 1995 who is a product of one of her previous relationships. She lives in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
